The Maine Coon is North America's only native longhaired cat, it is also one of the oldest recognized breeds in North America. Although it has been around since the late 1800's, it's popularity declined upon the arrival of the Persians in 1900. In the 1950's the breed regained its popularity and by 1980 the Maine Coon was recognized by all registries. Today, it is one of the most popular breeds among cat owners and breeders.
The Maine Coon is one of the largest breeds of domestic cats. Males can weigh between 12 and 18 lbs at full maturity with females weighing between 8 and 12 lbs. They come in many different colours and patterns with the most common being the brown tabby. Traditionally the Maine Coon was a well balanced rugged cat, adaptable to the harshest of conditions, from it's water repellent coat to the tufts of fur on it's paws the Maine Coon was definitely an example of survival of the fittest. Today not much has changed, some of the basic features include a shaggy uneven coat, strong square muzzle, large ears placed high on the head and a tail that is as long as it's torso, often referred to as the tail with the cat attached.
The Maine Coon has a very amiable disposition and they enjoy being part of the family. Overall they make wonderful pets that will enhance the lives of those who are close to them.
