  Kevin Somers Rock Star

Well I thought that Kevin Somers and Jono Gebert were the two oldest on Whatever Turns You On as it was rumoured that Christine was a year younger than the two of them but the truth was Christine it was the other way around.
She went to the same highschool as Kevin and Jono too.
She was also the host on the show and was a natural ham in the comedy skits. She introduced each episode as well as introducing the musical guests like Trooper, Ian Thomas and Troiano.
Christine was nicknamed Moose on the show and even hosted the sister show You Can't Do That On Television for 8 seasons.
She is now happy as a TV producer.

Greg:
How did you get involved with WTYO?

Christine: Producer Roger Price came to my school and held auditions for YCDTOTV; he then drew from this cast pool for all his other projects (WTYO, Turkey TV, etc)

Greg: How old were you when it became a series in the fall after the pilot in May of 79?

Christine:
Hmmm...trick question, I think!  in 1979 I was 16.  There, it's out. I'll be 42 this year.  And no more mature than 1979.

Greg: Since the show was aired on a network primetime did you get alot of fanmail since you were well loved by the viewers?

Christine: Not really...Canadians don't do fan mail so much, especially back then. I think alot of our fan mail ended up at Nick in NY and we didn't always see it all.

Greg:
What was your fondest memory doing the show?

Christine: Meeting Ruth Buzzi-wow, what a pro!  As always, working with Les Lye. The bands were fun as well.

Greg: Who did you get along the most in the show?

Christine:
I was really good friends with Kevin Somers and Jonathan Gebert, and we still keep in touch.

Greg: Do you stay in contact with anyone from the show?

Christine: Kevin, Jonathan, our drama coach Carole Hay.  Geoffrey Darby, Producer/director, we email occassionally.

Greg:
I understand you went to school with Kevin Somers. Did he tell you about the auditions for the sister show YCDTOTV?

Christine:
Nope, they announced it over the school PA system.  We really didn't hang out before we both got on the show.

Greg:
Were you two ever involved in drama classes at your school and participated in school plays?

Christine:
Not a one.  But I did write for the school paper and Jonathan Gebert was the photographer.

Greg:
Did you ever watch Ruth Buzzi before the series aired?

Christine:
I am old enough to have actually grown up watching "Laugh In".  So, I sure did.

Greg: What was your reaction when you found out you'd be working with her?

Christine:
I was pretty darned impressed!

Greg:
Now you sometimes introduced some of the musical guests although they lipsynched performing. Which one did you enjoy introducing the most?

Christine: Kim Mitchell.  I still can't believe they did our show.

Greg:
Were you a big fan of any of the musical guests? Tell us the experience.

Christine: Not really, but when Kim Mitchell was on about half my high school came to the taping.

Greg: I knew the Kevin Page Band in Boss Helal never made it big and was Triano from Repeats another local band that never made it big?

Christine: Both were very good like the rest of the guests.

Greg:
Now I remember three episodes that aired on YTV that are missing now and one of them is about spelling as Somers was dressed as the spelling bee (The funniest one I thought), antoher one was when Schenk was trying to escape from being kissed by Ruth Buzzi's character as his Aunt Agatha and Agatha in the end was only interested in Somers and the other one is when Schenk is doing a cereal commercial and his tongue is bitten by the prize inside the cereal box. Do you or anyone else have these episodes and what were the name of these eps and the plotlines? Who were the musical guests in each if they had any?

Christine:
Sorry, can't help you there.

Greg: When the show was axed due to poor ratings cause 7:30 pm wasn't a proper time for a children's show were you wondering what was going to happen next for your acting career?

Christine:
to be honest, I never really figured I HAD an acting career.  But I was concerned that I wouldn't get to go to work and hang with my friends anymore.

Greg:
Besides WTYO and YCDTOTV you did a bit of other acting like Turkey TV, Age and also co-hosted a science fact show. Did you ever appear in Les Lye's show Willy & Floyd?

Christine: I think I may have...don't recall.  I did do a summer of interviews on CJOH's morning show, where Les Lye and Bill Luxton (Willy and Floyd) played their newscaster-selves.

Greg:
What made you leave acting to produce shows in Ontario?

Christine:
I am a good host, but not necessarily a good actor.  I got really interested in directing when I did some on TTV, and ended up in art school studying film and video.

Greg:
Have you ever thought of making a comeback to acting? We sure miss you.

Christine:
Well, thanks!!  I haven't really, but it's not impossible.

Greg:
If a grown up version of WTYO ever arises to appeal the fans back then and watching a show now suitable for their age on their 20's and 30's would you participate in it?

Christine:
I'm always up for a new challenge!

Take care, and let me know how the site progresses,

Christine
