Les Lye was born on
November 18, 1924 in Toronto, Ontario and
earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree after
high school and enrolled at the
University of Toronto and then enrolled
in Lorne Greene's Academy of Radio Arts.
In 1948, he moved to Ottawa to join Frank
Ryan's CFRA team.
He became a radio announcer with many
popular groups on stations which is how
he learned to become a gifted voice over
artist making himself sound different
with any different character's he
portrayed before acting on TV making him
to be one of the top radio personalities.
Les became one of the first freelance
writers and performers on CJOH-TV when it
arose in 1961 which was a local station
in association with CTV which included a
little kids sketch show he starred in
with long-lasting CJOH partner Bill
Luxton called Uncle Willy &
Floyd which ran for 22 years
plus played all the male adult roles on WTYO
and it's sister show You Can't Do
That On Television which
enjoyed a 10 season run and
international acclaim mostly with people
in the U.S. but Les still continued to
work in Canadian TV mainly using his
talents as a voice over actor for
animated TV shows including The
Raccoons and The
Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin.
He retired from acting due to health
reasons but did attend all the Slime
Con reunions of YCDTOTV plus
was planning on writing a book on his
memories. However after surviving many
incidents due to his health he passed
away on July 21, 2009 due to natural
causes and is survived by his wife, kids
and grandchildren. He will always be
remembered for his work on this show. |

A tribute site to the
short-lived prime time version of You
Can't Do That On Television that
aired in the fall of 1979 every Tuesday night at
7:30pm on CTV all across Canada which had some of
the same skits like the dome, living room,
dungeon and classroom. WTYO
was a fast-paced sketch comedy for youth hosted
by Christine McGlade
and linked together from the familiar YCDTOTV
link set. Usually, one or two storylines would
run throughout each episode, most often unfolding
on the link set.
The series also had Laugh In veteran Ruth
Buzzi from Hollywood to play the
female adult roles as Les Lye
played the male adult roles and had some of the
same slapstick humor like the pie in the face and
in a couple of episodes the YCDTOTV
traditional green slime.
They also had a handful of other kids from
YCDTOTV like Kevin Somers,
Jonathan Gebert, Marc
Baillon, Kevin Schenk,
Rodney Helal and Lisa
Ruddy.
Most of the episodes there was a musical guest by
a Canadian band in their area of Ottawa, Ontario
performing a top hit song of theirs.
However the series was losing money afterwards
and couldn't afford to bring any more bands in or
keep the series running due to poor ratings since
it was a bad time slot for a kids show so after
the 14th episode aired in late December of 1979
the plug was pulled from the series.
