Choice Theory
Who Started this Training?
Dr. William Glasser began developing his
theory in the 1960's. Those of you who are familiar with Dr.
Glasser's early work may remember when he called his theory of human
behaviour Control Theory. Dr. Glasser no longer uses
this term having replaced it with Choice Theory.
What Is Choice Theory?
Choice Theory explains why we behave. It helps
us understand why we do what we do and why others do what they
do. Choice Theory helps us understand how we can make better
choices and challenges the age old stimulus response explanation for
behaviour. A popular stimulus response phrase is 'for every action
there is a reaction'. Choice Theory would say 'for every action there
is a choice'. Choice Theory teaches us that we have
four psychological needs and one physiological need that drives our
behaviour choices. We are compelled to satisfy those
needs. However, we have choice in the ways we
attempt to satisfy our need for love and connection, for
personal power in our own life, for fun/ pleasure and for our freedom
need.
Why Take Choice Theory Training?
We have increasingly become a culture that
looks for someone or something to blame. Many can be heard saying "It's
not my fault, it's their fault." This model fosters self-reliance,
self-evaluation and taking responsibility for choices made.
Understanding
human behaviour and interaction from the perspective of Choice Theory
enhances interpersonal skills and will enable you to see 'difficult'
people/situations from a more confident position and in a more creative
light. Training in this model is useful both at home and at
work. Relationships or environments that foster better
relationships lead to individuals and groups choosing to be more
cooperative. You may actually find that your child is
learning this model in their school. Dr. Glasser's work is
used in many school districts throughout the world.
Who Takes this Training?
Individuals take this training for career
advancement as well as personal growth. Participants represent the
helping professions, the business world, educators, and parents. The
training expands and challenges our intellectual and
emotional growth.
How Do I Get Started Locally?
You begin by taking a Basic Week in Choice
Theory, Reality Therapy and Lead management. The Basic Week
is often taught over two Fridays and two Saturdays. Having
the four days broken into two sections means less time away from work
and family. However, the training can also be arranged to take place on
four consecutive days or on two Saturdays and two Sundays.
You can take four of the five levels of
the training program in Burnaby and North Vancouver,
B.C. Simply start with a four day workshop called a Basic
Intensive Week in Choice Theory, Reality Therapy and Lead
Management. You will have access to three local instructors
who have been accredited by the William Glasser Institute in Los
Angeles, California.
If you do not live within traveling distance
of Vancouver, B.C., contact me and I can discuss how training could
take place in your own community.
What Does Certification Mean?
After completing the first level of training,
the Basic Week, you may find yourself interested in continuing your
training towards certification in this world famous model.
Certification involves five levels of training - the Basic Week is the
first level. Each level involves 28 to 30 hours of
training.
Certification is granted by The Glasser Institute, to those who have
completed all five training levels. The training cannot be
completed in less than 16 months and can take longer if you wish.
Training days are arranged primarily on weekends so as not to interfere
with work or other schedules.
Do I Have to Commit to all Five
Levels?
No. You are not required to commit to the
entire Certification program. You may simply want to enrich your skills
by completing a Basic Week.
Do I Have to Have a Degree?
No. Access to learning does not
depend on university graduation.
