It was one of the worst Mays on record over Southern Manitoba as persistent cool and wet weather put a damper on agricultural and recreational activities and left Manitobans wondering if they would ever see warm dry weather this year. The month featured 13 days of precipitation including 2 major storm events.. a record late season snowstorm on May 11-12th that dropped some 20-40 cm of snow across Southern Manitoba, then a month ending rainstorm on the 29th-31st that drenched southern Manitoba with 50 to 70 mm of rain. At my site, the total monthly precipitation topped out at a whopping 156 mm, some 2.5 times the normal May average of 59 mm and the wettest month at my station since records began in 2001. At Winnipeg airport, it was the wettest May since 1977 with 134 mm for the month, the 5th wettest May since records began in 1872. The month was also tied as the 6th coldest on record with a mean temperature 7.4C, some 5 degrees below normal for May. There were only 4 days above normal for the month, with only 5 days reaching the 20 degree mark (normally May sees 14 days reach into the 20s - May 2003 saw 19 days of 20C or more.) The cool wet weather left many ditches and fields full of water by the end of the month and put a serious delay in the growing season for farmers, many of whom are still waiting to seed due to cold soil temperatures. This month is a sharp contrast to last year that saw ideal growing conditions leading to one of the best harvests in years over the Red River valley.
