A very terrible thing has happened!  All the butterflies have disappeared from Vancouver!  Scientists at the University of British Columbia have come to you and your classmates for help.  They know that you have been studying butterflies this year and they feel you can help them to learn more about butterflies.

Your task is to learn all that you can about butterflies with help from a grown-up in your family.  The researchers are especially interested in learning about:

          1.  Make a Butterfly Journal to keep all your information in.  Staple five pieces         of blank paper together.  On the cover write "My Butterfly Journal" and             your name.

2. There are many different types of butterflies.

3.  The butterfly goes through many changes before it becomes a butterfly.
What are the main four stages?  Click on the link below and print out the      four pictures.  Colour them and glue them into your Butterfly Journal.

4.   The scientist think that maybe there is not enough food for the                   butterflies.

5.   In order for the scientist to determine if the butterflies are truly missing      they have to determine the differences between moths and butterflies.

The image “http://members.tripod.com/~EagleEyes66/BUTTERFLIES/86.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.    Find three differences between moths and butterflies.  With your             grown-up helper, write them in your Butterfly Journal.

Congratulations!  You have helped to save the butterflies.  Please bring your Butterfly Journal to school so Miss Wolkenbrod can pass on your very valuable research to the scientists!

To self-evaluate your work, think about the following questions:

This WebQuest was designed for Kindergarten aged children to compliment their study of butterflies that is occuring in their classroom. This Webquest follows the BC Ministry of Education's IRP goals:

identify the stages in the life cycle of a plant and of a pet or other animals (Science)
describe the appearance and behaviour of a variety of animals (Science)
determine the requirements of healthy plants and healthy animals (Science)
collect information from a variety of sources (Social Studies)
demonstrate an awareness that information can be obtained from a variety of sources (Language Arts)
demonstrate an interest in evaluating their own work (Language Arts)
demonstrate an interest in sharing their work (Language Arts
