After the Basilica of the Sacred Heart was built, it was criticized
just as the Eiffel Tower was for being gaudy, but it has come to
be one of the most recognizable landmarks in Paris.
The basilica was designed by an architect named Abadie in a
Romano-Byzantine style, and was constructed out of Chateau-
Landon stone, which whitens as it ages. On the front facade,
statues of St. Joan of Arc and St. Louis on horses stand beneath
a statue of Christ. The interiors are decorated with many mosaics
designed by Luc-Olivier Merson.
