BLUE CITY - JODHPUR, RAJASTHAN

Jodhpur epitomizes the problem of touristic
expectation. Advertised as 'The Blue City' and usually framed
carefully in photographs to support the slogan, most of the city is
actually a dull and sandy grey. The feature of the old town that I
found most striking was its topographical structure - it spills off the
hillside, bursting out in dense, haphazard clusters of cubes.
In designing the model, I chose to emphasize a
dichotomy between the fantasy and reality of Jodhpur. The form and
colour are in a state of flux, depending on the angle of viewing, one or
the other becomes more prominent. From the side, the fantasy comes
into view - a solid block of blue, unmarked by any particular
form. Straight on, the reality - a cascading, sandy mass of
structures. |
