GATEWAY - MUMBAI,
MAHARASHTRA

The Gateway of India, a massive colonial
construction and popular tourist attraction in Mumbai, appeared
phenomenally light to me. What struck me when I first set eyes on
it was that my eyes did not set on it at all, but rather on the milling
crowds of people at the water's edge, just beyond the central
arch. Without any visual or programmatic focal point of its own,
the Gateway became a simple frame for the activity surrounding it.

In the model, I attempted to
express my reaction through stripping the monument down and
exaggerating its openness, pulling it strongly out of the page,
keeping its coloration consistent with that of the backing piece,
and introducing small figurative bits of contrast to serve as a
focal point.
