Winnipeg was bustling with theatres; constantly changing hands, shutting down for renovations, coming up with new program structures, new buildings, reopenings, and bringing in an amazing number of acts, all of this activity enthusiastically and lavishly written down in the newspapers. (These listings are from the Manitoba Free Press.) These theatres were a vital part of the vast touring circuit that encompassed many cities of North America and acts came from all over the world.

These pages are mainly about the people. I'm amazed at some of the names that are showing up. There is an alphabetical list here of everyone and a list in order of appearance at the end of each weekly page.

I understand that there are many people looking for their ancestors that have tramped the boards and, being a bit of a genealogist myself, I know the thrill of finding one. I hope this helps some of you. In most cases I've included the descriptions of acts, but not always all the details. They were very wordy back then and I'm a lousy typer. I especially love the pictures and wish they were better quality but I still like these gritty, ghostly glimpses. I will warn you when they are really ghostly. I would love to see more actual onstage performance or backstage pictures but these seem pretty rare.

This is a work in progress.
