Mary Boland, John Drew in The Perplexed Husband

Mon Tues Wed

  • "The Perplexed Husband" by Alfred Sutro, starring:
    • John Drew
    • Mary Boland
    • Hubert Druce
    • Alice John
    • Nina Sevening
This four act comedy created a great sensation in London when it was first produced this year because of its satirical attack upon women suffrage and the amusing situations that arise when "the new woman" is confronted with that almost unknown being, "the new man."

Blanche Bates

Thurs Fri Sat

  • Blanche Bates in the London success, "The Witness For the Defense" by A.E. Mason. Miss Bates is a handsome woman, and she is just as natural off the stage as on, which is saying that her art is so perfect one does not realize that it is art at all. Whether she plays in roaring comedy, like "Nobody's Widow," or in emotional drama, like "The Fighting Hope," or in something quaint, unreal and ideal, like "The Darling of the Gods," she is always convincing. It was her interpretation of the leading role in the playlet, "Mme. Butterfly," that inspired the grand opera of that name.
The story of the play is a complex one and begins in the hills of India with a background such as Rudyard Kipling might have limned. An unhappy woman, the wife of a civil service officer, made desperate by her bruite of a husband, kills him. A lover of her happy, youthful days, suspects her of the deed but does not know that she actually committed the murder, and so skillfully does testify in her behalf at the trial that she wins an aquittal. Later in England on the verge of a happy marriage with a young officer in the British army, her fiance's family suspect that she was guilty and question "the witness for the defense" who again saves the day for her. The play abounds in vital human interest.

Orpheum

Irene Franklin

  • Fred Watson and Reno Santos, song, dance, comedy

  • Moran and Wiser, a boomerang hat throwing novelty in which they take all manner of headgear and manipulate it so dexterously that it returns boomerang style after having travelled long distances through the house. Both men are comedians and have an attractive way of putting their turn across.
  • Josephine McIntyre and Bob Harty, Sugarplum girl and Marshmallow boy
  • The Carson Brothers, two famous Swedish athletes, a demonstration of strength and symmetry with replicas of famous groups in marble.
  • a new series of talking moving pictures by Edison
