Traveling to Toronto

Well it happened.  They posted me out of Alberta after 18 years.  With Brett going into grade 12 this fall it made no sense to move the family so I am going alone.  Cathy however, is driving with me to keep me company, then she will fly back next week.  I dropped Brett off at the Red Arrow this morning as he is traveling to Calgary to visit his cousins for the week.  Here are some pictures of the trip so far.

Day 1

Cathy Drops her vehicle off at the airport so she has transport when she gets back

Arriving at Wainwright to see how the divers were doing.

Warm up presentation as Mark presents a DAVCO welding hat.

The break between dives at clear lake.

Receiving my big award in Wainwright a DAVCO Dive Hat.  I guessed how deep it would take a Ping Pong Ball to implode in a local contest. Want to know how deep? Yes Connie is standing on a SCUBA Tank to lessen the height differential.

A trip across the country would not be complete without road construction.  I wonder how many road construction areas we will pass through? (Start a Pool)

Hurry get to the hotel room so we can both turn on our computers, play games and ignore each other.

DAY 2

Today we departed the Travelodge in Saskatoon and headed to Brandon.  The first stop however was breakfast. We decided on Grainfields on Circle route but a paving crew was blocking all entries in and out.  Those who were at Grainfields I guess had to stay for an extra cup of coffee and those trying to get in would have to wait 15 mins or so.  We decided to carry on and went to Smitty's instead.  Pics from day 2.

A visit to Kandahar and note the ruins in behind.  No this is not Kandahar Afghanistan but Kandahar Saskatchewan.

Slow service Sunday in Yorktown Sask. Cathy finally materializes with her Tim's coffee.  The girl serving me at Wendy's obviously discovered her 90lb frame could not take the whole keg of beer last night.  I thought it might be specific to this store but when I went to fill up at the Fas Gas I realized Slow Service Sunday must be a town phenomena.

Crossing the Manitoba/Saskatchewan border.

Cathy successfully emerges from the rest stop.  Note she was driving when we missed the turnoff the first time.

A quick stop at Ruby's in Brandon.  Ruby worked with me in our last job and she was in the same band as Cathy.

Cathy, Ruby and Thom on their front deck.  Ruby and Thom just moved in two weeks ago and had one of those memorable moves with the virgin moving crew.

Day Three

Worlds biggest Coke can in Portage La Prairie.

Down with Ontario

Enjoying a beer at the waterfront in Kenora

Cathy does the Titanic pose on the MS Kenora

The MS Kenora where Cathy and I enjoyed a 2 hr dinner cruise.

Husky the Musky Kenora's 40' fiberglass fish.

Day Four

Dryden enough said.

Bridge repair along the hwy permits an unscheduled 15min stretch.

A look over the park at the waterfront in Thunder Bay

Enjoying a glass of wine on the waterfront.

Mackay Mtn lookout, with Thunder bay in the background.

Mackay Mtn lookout, Cathy points to the Thunder Bay airport.

Day 5

What we saw today was scenery and road construction.

A dawn view of the sleeping giant from our room at Thunderbay

Lots of road construction today (x8 in fact). It took us almost 2hrs to drive the first 100km outside of Thunder Bay.

There were however, some very senic views.

Cathy decided to break out the chanter and play some tunes.

The Big Goose in Wawa, we had to stop for gas and all along the lake it has been the most expensive so far $1/liter.

Looking out onto lake superior.

Day 6-10

Well the rest of the trip I will enter here.  For those that were counting, we were stopped 15 times by highway construction. Almost all of these were in Ontario because of the single lane highways.  After arriving in Toronto, Cathy and I went to Glencoe to visit her family.

Outside the hotel in Orillia.

The living room of my apartment in Toronto. The apartment is not bad two bedrooms and about 1100 sq ft.

Smokey the Cat who owns the house. My mother in law would be the Cat's tenant and servant.

Pat and I frowning for the camera while enjoying the company around her pool August long weekend.

Joanne giving me a splash while relaxing in the pool.

Cathy stands by the clock of the restored Glencoe train station.  The station is now the town museum and my late father in law Gerald was a significant contributor to its restoration and construction.
