In
Feb 2001 we went
to our friend Paul's house in Kelowna at the beginning of the
trip and stayed to do some skiing. We arrived on the
Saturday and it was good to see Paul again. The next day we
went up to Silverstar Ski Resort and the conditions were
great. This year there has been little snow and most of the
ski mountains are having difficulty but the Okanagan mountains
are always good skiing. We got our equipment and headed up
the lift. I was a little afraid about Brett I hadn't seen
him ski in a while and Brett really isn't the sporting
type. We started following Paul down a relatively easy
intermediate run. Brett began and was skiing great and we
stopped a couple of times to gather everyone together
again. I thought wow this is going to be a great day of
skiing. Paul stopped
once again about half way down the mountain. Brett then
followed up but came a little too close to Paul and skied overtop
of his ski tips. Naturally Brett lost a ski and did a
classic "yard sale" wipe out all over the
mountain. He was fine however. We gathered up his
stuff and got him back on his feet. He then seemed to be
lagging a bit after the wipe out and fell again. With each
successive fall Brett became slower and was more off
balance. Soon he was little more than a blob with skis
rolling down the mountain. His confidence was shot and he
was going back in his box. It had taken 10 minutes to go
half way down the mountain and an hour to go the rest of the way
which was actually the easier part. Oh well its back to the
beginning for Brett and skiing. The next day the kids
played video games on Paul's computer and Paul and I went to
Masters swim and swam about 80 laps. I hadn't done that in
awhile. It was good to see Paul and his family again.
We
hit the weather right out in BC although we had to wait an hour
in Rodgers Pass as they did avalanche control. One day
however, it snowed more than the entire winter we have had so far
in Alberta. It was however, gone in a few
days.
