The Marco Matrunola "Agile" Edition Custom Guitar:
Agile2

This fine custom guitar body was made for Marco Matrunola and features construction of an eastern maple top, alder wood back, and ebony knobs. The neck is a Wilkat headless, reinforced with two graphite bars, and a two way adjustable truss rod. The ever reliable Steinberger R-Trem bridge provides stable quick tuning and stays in tune once set.

The pickups are passive Carvin Allan Holdsworth models (neck and bridge), and these babies really impressed me -- thanks Carvin! They can do it all, from the raunchy soulful blues bites, to the headbanging power attack of heavy power chords, and the delightfully clean tones of any single coil pickups. The coil switching using push/pull pots together with the 3 way toggle switch, allows for a multiple of distinct voices. And, while I was unable to test it properly, it also features a Roland GK3 Pickup Kit for synth guitar.

Marco came to me with the design idea for this guitar, and he had sketched out the basic body shape, and asked me if I could make this his concept work, and to do it with a headless neck, but one of wood rather than a graphite composite. I was delighted to have had the opportunity, and soon after, Marco's "Agile" model was born! In the interest of keeping it clean, elegant, and also considering ergonomics, Marco planted the seeds, and I watered and nurtured them into this little
powder Keg" of a guitar! It was a blast, and the results were well worth it, and I am extremely pleased to have been a part of it's creation!

The body features chambered construction, and the neck is eastern maple with an ebony finger board, and 24 jumbo frets. The head piece (not shown) was taken from a Steinberger Spirit model, as was the R-Trem bridge, and although the Agile has a slightly wider neck, the profile was blended to make it all work and have a feel of it's own.

Easy access and great looks!

The Danish oiled and polished finish provides a satiny smooth soft luster that brings out the
beauty of wood grain, and provides protection and appealing good looks. High gloss finishes
are nice, but nothing compliments fine wood as well as an oiled finish! The back also features
a matching alder wood cavity control cover -- death to plastic!

The weight of this instrument is light and well balanced by the combination of the woods
selected, chambered body, and this results in an extremely comfortable guitar with super sustain and tone, and feel.

The eastern maple top brightens the sound without being overbearing.

Marco's Initial Review:
The Agile is at home, and is another masterpiece :-)

The GK is working perfectly, but the unbelievable part  is: I did not need any regulation - you know, Roland pick up sensitivity, the gap between strings and the pick up and so on- it tracks perfectly and effortlessly all I play. Practically perfect!

The guitar arrived early this morning, and luckily my wife was there to receive it.

I was at work, chewing my hands because I was terribly curious and wanted to check the Agile asap.
Once at home I have mounted the neck as you suggested - man, your quality control and tolerances are simply stunning- the neck seats in the pocket even without screws :-)

What could I say? This is a small wonder and I am again very happy, now I have the perfect guitar to drive the synths and to play solos, all in one and without compromise!
The neck? A bijoux, very comfortable and fast and first of all is wood!
Now I need at least a month to form an opinion with a sense, but I can say now this is what I wanted and surely much, much more than I expected.

And the woods? Plain maple is wonderful and the alder is fantastic. And like the MSS this guitar smells good and natural, I can feel the oil scent from the door when I am back at home :-)
Thanks a lot again Bill!

No need to say I am honored and proud of your new site addition, just please wait for a more accurate check of the Agile :-)

Later,
Marco

Bill's Reply:
It was a great and rewarding experience to put together this guitar for Marco, and he is an ideal guy to work with -- he knows what he wants, but is flexible at the same time, and that just made it even easier for me to help make his creativity turn into reality -- I was sorry to see this baby go out the door (of course that happens to me all the time ), but I know there will be more great opportunities to come -- thanks in large part to Marco! -- once people see this baby.....

Notes: Carvin, Moses Graphite, Roland, and Steinberger, etc. are registered trade names of the manufacturers and are not affiliated with Wilkat Guitars in any way.

Special Thanks to Ned Steinberger for his words of wisdom, & for creating the "original" Steinberger guitars, tuners, and bridges. His ingenious designs will live on!
