The Western Handgunners Formation of the Society Because of the difficulties and hostility encountered by the original members when attempting to shoot "Western" style at established Rifle and Shotgun ranges, it was soon realized that a club should be formed where the traditional styles of shooting could be practiced. These styles originated in the 19th Century North American West, and were a direct consequence of the necessity of protection from wild animals and hunting for food. What was a way of life then is now known as Cowboy Action Shooting. The Western Handgunners had been practicing this style by preference since the early 1960s, and primarily wanted a club of their own where they could practice in safety. Primarily a handgun and pistol club, the skill of shooting with a rifle was not neglected, especially the older models of Winchester and the like. |
