San Diego 2 at Minnesota 5. Fran Huck and Wayne Connelly each had a goal and an assist for the Fighting Saints.

Calgary 4 at Winnipeg 7. Butch Deadmarsh scored twice for Calgary and the Cowboys led 4-3 at one point. But the Jets came back with 4 unanswered goals to win it. Ulf Nilsson had 3 g 2 a and Bobby Hull had a goal and 4 assists to lead the Jets.
Toronto 4 Quebec 5. The Toros led 4-2 at one point in the second period. But three consecutive goals gave the Nordiques the win. The big goal by Real Cloutier with a minute left on an outside shot was a killer. Vaclav Nedomansky had 3 goals for Toronto.
New England 2 at Indianapolis 6. Rene Leclerc and Ron Buchanan each had two goals and two assists as the linemates helped the Racers wash out the Whalers.
Cincinnati 5 at Cleveland 7 The Crusaders scored 5 second period goals to blow this one out. Jim Harrison had 2 goals and an assist for Cleveland and Bryan Campbell had the same for the Stingers.
Denver 5 at Indianapolis 2 Denver was outshot 50-27 but Cam Newton was outstanding in stealing a win in Indy. Don Borgeson and Ralph Backstrom each had a goal and two assists for Denver to lead their attack.
San Diego 3 at Houston 7 Rich Preston had two goals and Ted Taylor had a goal and two assists as the Aeros defeat the Mariners
Minnesota 3 at Phoenix 1 Johnny McKenzie, Fran Huck and Mike Walton all scored as the Fighting Saints defeat the Roadrunners. John Garrett was terrific in net for Minnesota stopping 40 shots and 5/6 goalie ratings.

Winnipeg 5 at Edmonton 3 Veli Pekka Ketola had two goals and Bobby Hull and Anders Hedberg each had a goal and an assist as the Jets beat the Oilers.
Quebec 4 at Calgary 7 Calgary explodes for 4 third period goals to win this one going away. Gavin Kirk had a goal and three assists to lead the Cowboys. Charles Constantin had two goals for Quebec
Indianapolis 5 at Cincinnati 4 (Overtime) Rene Leclerc's 2nd goal of the game at 4:23 of overtime proved to be the winner for the Racers.
Cleveland 3 at New England 3 (Overtime) Gerry Cheevers and Christopher Abrahamsson were both outstanding as the teams played to a tie. Abrahamsson stopped 10/12 goalie ratings as Cleveland outshot the Whalers 45-40. Rich Leduc had two goals for the Crusaders.
Houston 7 at Minnesota 4 Gordie Howe and Frank Hughes each had 2 goals and an assist as the Aeroes beat the Fighting Saints. Johnny "Pie" Mackenzie had two goals for Minnesota.
Phoenix 9 at San Diego 4 Robbie Ftorek and Del Hall each had 3 goals and Ron Huston chipped in 2 more as the Roadrunners blow away the Mariners. Norm Ferguson had 2 goals for San Diego.

Edmonton 6 at Calgary 3 Norm Ullman had a goal and two assists and Skip Krake had a goal and an assist as the Oilers pick up their first win.
Quebec 6 at Edmonton 2 Chris Bordeleau had 2 goals and 2 assists as the Nordiques blow out the Oilers.
Calgary 5 at Toronto 4 Francois Lacombe scored with less than two minutes to tie it and then scored in overtime to be the hero as Calgary beat Toronto. Danny Lawson had a goal and 3 assists for Calgary and Lou Nistico had 2 for Toronto.
Cleveland 3 at Indianapolis 2 Al McDonough scored with less than 8 minutes left to win it for the Crusaders in an upset.
Cincinnati 5 at New England 5 (OT) A wild third period saw 5 goals being scored but nobody could score in overtime. Tommy Webster and Dennis Sobchuck each had two goals.

Phoenix 3 at Houston 4 (OT) Gordie Howe scored his second goal of the game 3 minutes into overtime on the powerplay to give the Aeroes the win.
Minnesota 4 at San Diego 5 San Diego scored all five of their goals consecutively in the second period to win this one. SD Ray Adduono had 2 goals along with the Saints Mike Walton
Indianapolis 5 at New England 4 (OT) Tom Webster scored twice to tie it for the Whalers, but Rene Leclerc scored with 37 seconds left to give the Racers the victory. Leclerc finished with 2 goals and an assist and Webster had the hat trick.
Cleveland 5 at Cincinnati 9 Guite, Locas, and Gene Sobchuk each had two goals as the Stingers swarm the Crusaders.
Houston 5 at San Diego 3 Don Larway scored three goals and linemate Gord Labossiere had another as the Mariners gave the Aeroes a run for their money in a close one. Ted Taylor had four assists.
Phoenix 3 at Minnesota 1. Veneruzzo, Monomen and Ftorek each scored to lead Phoenix to victory.

Cincinnati 2 at Indianapolis 6 Pat Stapleton had a goal and two assists to lead the Racers.
New England 7 at Cleveland 1 . Mike Rogers had 3 g, 1 a and Tom Webster had 2 g 2 a to lead the Whalers to victory.

Quebec 5 at Winnipeg 6 (overtime) Quebec had a 4-0 lead , but Veli Pekka Ketola scored at 5:56 of overtime to give the Jets a huge come from behind win. Anders Hedberg had 2 goals for Winnipeg
Calgary 3 at Edmonton 5 Edmonton had 4 second period goals to blow out the Cowboys. Tim Sheehy led the Oiler attack with 2 g 1 a.
Winnipeg 8 at Toronto 3 The Toros playoff chances were destroyed when Tommy Bergman had 4 assists and Anders Hedberg had 2 goals as the Jets cruised past the Toros.
Edmonton 2 at Quebec 6The Oilers led 2-0 early, but the Nordiques fired 6 consecutive goals to win it.
Toronto 3 at Calgary 6 Toronto led 3-1 late in the second period, but Dick Sentes had two goals and an assist to lead the Cowboys to victory and a playoff spot.

#1. San Diego 5 at Phoenix 4 . Norm Ferguson scores his third goal of the game at 4:16 of overtime to give the Mariners a shocking win and a 1-0 series lead. Kevin Morrison chipped in 4 assists for SD and Ron Huston of Phoenix had 2 g 1 a.
#2 Phoenix 2 at San Diego 3 . Norm Ferguson scored on the powerplay at 3:30 of the third to give the Mariners a lead they would not relinquish.

San Diego Mariners win the best of three series 2-0.

#1 Cleveland 4 at New England 5 (Overtime) Mike Rogers scores at 8:32 of overtime to give the Whalers the win. Rosaire Paiement had two goals for NE, and Ron Ward replied with two for Cleveland.
#2 New England 3 at Cleveland 6 Tom Edur had two goals and two assists and Ron Ward chipped in two more goals as Cleveland evens the series.
#3 Cleveland 1 at New England 3 Linemates Mike Rogers and Rosaire Paiement each scored two early goals and the Whalers went on to defeat Cleveland to win the series.

QUARTERFINALS


#1 Edmonton 3 at Winnipeg 2 The Oilers jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one period and hung on for the victory. The Oilers outshot the Jets 38-25. 3rd liners Russell, Krake and fourth liner MacGregor scored the Oil.
#2. Winnipeg 5 at Edmonton 4 (Overtime) Veli Pekka Ketola scores his second goal of the game at 6:51 of overtime to save the Winnipeg Jets for another day. The Oilers appeared to have the series won when they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. But the Jets battled back on goals from Lindstrom, Lindh, and Hedberg to take a lead. But Edmonton took over from that point to tie the game.
#3 Edmonton 1 at Winnipeg 3 Linemates Norm Beaudin and Veli Pekka Ketola scored three goals in five minutes midway through the game to break open a very even affair. Beaudin picked up first star scoring on two outside shots.

#1.Quebec 5 at Calgary 2 Richard Brodeur stood on his head and Donny McLeod turned in a poor performance as the Nordiques take game one.
#2 Calgary 5 at Quebec 7 Marc Tardif had two goals and an assist, and Christian Bordeleau had 3 assists to lead the Nordiques to victory.

Quebec Nordiques win the best of three series 2-0.

#1. San Diego 4 at Houston 2 Houston outshot the Mariners 51-27 but Ernie Wakely was equal to the task. Wakely stops 8/9 goalie ratings to steal the win for the Mariners. The line of Ferguson-Peacosh-Lacroix each had a goal and an assist for San Diego.
#2 Houston 3 at San Diego 2 . Houston outshoots San Diego 46-30 and dominates most of the game as Mark Howe, Lund and Hinse score as the Aeros even the series.
#3. San Diego 2 at Houston 7. The Aeros were down 2-0 after the first period and then exploded for four goals in the second and three goals in the third to win this one going away. Mark Howe had two goals and Gordie Howe had three assists to lead the Houston attack.

Houston Aeros win the best of three series 2-1.

#1. New England 3 at Indianapolis 1. Rick Ley scores a powerplay goal at 9:52 of overtime to give the Whalers game one. The Whalers were lucky in this one as they never led, and Ron Climie scored with less than two minutes to play to tie it.
#2 Indianapolis 4 at New England 5. Rosaire Paiement scored two goals early in the third period to break a 3-3 tie to give the Whalers the win. Late in the second period the Whalers were up 3-1 when Nick Harbaruk had two goals for Indy to tie the game after two periods. But Paiement was the hero as he had a hat trick for New England . AFter Chris Abrahamsson was hurt, backup Bruce Landon stopped 27 shots (3/5 gr) to help in the win.

STRAT-O-MATIC SEMI-FINALS


#1 Quebec 6 at Winnipeg 5. The Nordiques come from behind and score 4 third period goals to win this one. Chris Bordeleau scored on the powerplay with just 52 seconds left in the game to give the Nordiques the win. Serge Bernier, Marc Tardif, Real Cloutier and Bordeleau each had a goal and two assists for the Nordiques
#2 Winnipeg 6 at Quebec 1. Joe Daley was the story in this game. Early in the game he made save after save to keep the Jets ahead. Daley finished with 36 saves including 9/9 on goalie ratings. Bobby Hull had two goals for the Jets
#3 Quebec 1 at Winnipeg 11. Winnipeg went wild in game three scoring goal after goal to easily win the series.

But Rosaire Paiment and Tom Webster with just 2 minutes left to give the Whalers the wild win. Thommie Abrahamsson, Tom Webster and Andre Hinse each had two goals. Rick Ley of the Whalers had 1 g 4 a and Webster chipped in 3 more assists.
#2 Houston 5 at New England 2. Houston manhandles the Whalers in New England and Wayne Rutledge was solid in net for the Aeros. Gord Labossiere had two goals late in the second period to put this game out of reach. Tom Webster scored twice for New England.
#3 New England 1 at Houston 6. Houston blows out the Whalers in game three to win the series.

#2 Houston 1 at Winnipeg 5 Winnipeg leaves no doubt as to who is the best team in the WHA with a big 5-1 win over the Houston Aeros. Norm Beaudoin was again the hero popping in two goals for the Jets. Winnipeg outshot Houston 40-28 to win the Avco Cup
