Westview Heights Executive Committee:

MEMBER PROFILES

In the upcoming months we will be introducing
you to members of the Executive Committee.

Marian Roth, President

My husband and I moved into the Westview Community in 1987.  We liked what the community had to offer and felt it was a great place to start a family.   With the addition of our two boys, my life took on a new twist.   While still maintaining a full time job, I now had another duty as a full time mom.  Although our roots were in Westview, my kids attended elementary school at Bishop Klein and St Peters School.  My one son was actively involved in ball at the community level and played with Westview for several years before switching to Massey to be with his friends.  My other son, who's all year passion was soccer played with the Dundonald C.A.    In the winter our family was busy with hockey and soccer, and my curling days took a back seat.
That was about the time I needed to do something with my spare time (ha ha), and was sought out to become a volunteer on the Westview C.A.   My role was very small at first, but at the same time very fulfilling.  My years on the C.A. brought wonderful and unforgettable memories such as being a coordinator for the Annual Softball Tournament.   For the last five years I’ve represented the association as the treasurer.
My life just got busier as I’m currently the President of ED Feehan Parent Council, volunteering on  Westview Citizen Patrol, recruiting more volunteers in Westview,  managing a soccer team and being there for my kids as they are now both are in high school.
I cherish all these moments and have never had any regrets with all the sacrifices and energy I’ve exhausted over the last 9 years (who's counting) on the Association. So if you've ever had thoughts about volunteering whether it's for your favorite charity, school or community, I highly encourage all of you to consider taking that leap.   It’s a great way to meet people and volunteering can be very gratifying.

Wayne Johnson, Citizen Patrol Coordinator

Our family moved to Westview Heights in 1979 when our daughter was starting Kindergarten. Both my wife Judy and I became involved in the community shortly after, Judy with Home and School and me helping to coach ball teams.  In the mid 1980's I joined the Westview Heights Community Association as a member at large and later equipment coordinator. The annual ball tournament was a big thing then.  The first year we cooked 1000 pounds of hamburger.  When our kids stopped taking part in community events I eventually stepped down, and I assumed my days with the Association were over.
A couple of years ago I saw in the newsletter that gangs were potentially a problem in Westview Heights.  The community was organizing a Citizen Patrol.  I volunteered to help out.  Two years later I was asked to “temporarily” assume the coordinator position.  I vowed not to get involved beyond Citizens Patrol but as the last 8 to 10 months has gone by I find myself getting more involved with more of the general activities. I find my involvement with the Community Association very rewarding.  I have met a lot of people who have an interest in the community.  When your kids leave home you lose touch with your neighbours.  The Community Association is a very worthwhile organization that provides valuable services to our residents.  We have a shortage of volunteers which causes a few people to carry sometimes a big time commitment.  Just a few more people would make the jobs easier to handle.
I particularly would like to thank those who volunteer for Citizen Patrol, and I invite you to join us for a walk once or twice a month!

Jennifer Henrie, Indoor Coordinator

When I read in the December '05 newsletter that Indoor Programs would be cancelled in January if there wasn't any help, I gave a call and left my phone number and the rest is history.  Being new to Saskatoon, I quickly found out that there is no better way of learning about a new city and community than to volunteer!  Busy moms, working dads, retired grandparents, university students, newcomers and even those with no previous experience, ALL make great volunteers.  Hope to see you soon!

Shannon Christensen, Newsletter Coordinator

Our family has lived in the Westview Heights Community for 4 years now. My husband and I have been married for 17 years and we have 4 children ages 15, 13, 3 and 2. Although our children keep us very busy, I still like to put time aside to help others whenever I can. In 2004 I saw in the WHCA newsletter that a newsletter coordinator was needed, and I thought that this would be a great way to help out as well as get to know some of the people in Westview Heights.
Recently I updated my resume and I was amazed at all of the new skills that I was able to include because of my experience with the WHCA! I’ve also made the acquaintance of some of the most generous people in our city and have a greater appreciation of Community Associations and volunteerism in general. In the past few months 9 people have stepped forward to fill vacant positions on the WHCA Executive, which is very exciting because together, we can work to make Westview Heights one of the safest and most wonderful places to live in Saskatoon. I’m looking forward to sponsoring more activities and events for our citizens but most of all to supporting our youth as much as possible and
hopefully channeling their energy into positive activities so that they can become responsible and caring citizens in the future.

Join the Westview Heights
Community Association Executive

The executive coordinates the business in Westview Heights.  They are all volunteers that ensure the needs of our members are addressed.  Without an executive, the Association could not operate and community programs could not run.

The volunteers who serve on the Executive coordinate Community Watch/Citizen Patrol, recreational, sports, and social activities at a minimal cost to its members. The Community Association helps encourage a sense of community and acts as a liaison with the City of Saskatoon, Leisure Services and the Saskatoon Police on a number of issues affecting the neighborhood.

The Association's objectives are to represent the interests of residents, provide safe and enjoyable leisure programs and enhance quality of life in the neighborhood.

Our 2005 Annual General Meeting was held on October 18, 2005 at Caroline Robins Community School. Elections for Executive positions were held at this time. All Westview Heights families that have a valid membership were eligible to vote at the meeting.

Joining the Executive Committee is your opportunity to volunteer your time and have a voice in making a difference in the community you live in. You do not have to have experience to volunteer for Executive positions! Other Executive members will help you to learn your new role and offer assistance in any way they can!

All Executive positions require that the executive member: attend monthly meetings from September to June; present a verbal report at each monthly meeting; offer assistance with other members/activities when help is required.
