Notes for WILMOT EUGENE( WARDELL) WARDLE:

The original homestead farm in Springvale of Wilmot and Fanny Wardle continues in the hands of EDWARD GORDON WARDLE, a grandson. He first owned the west 1/2 of section 24-10-28, and by removing bluffs and stones, leveling potholes and ditching, is making it into a more productive farm.

In the spring of 1962, when Charles Kenneth (Ed's brother), left the farm, Ed bought the east ½ of section 24-10-28 from his father, Gordon Eugene, who entered into cement block manufacturing.

The stone and brick house was damaged beyond repair--by fire in the fall of 1963, from which time Ed operated the farm from Virden until he married Anna Rychliwski of Winnipeg, on December 28, 1968. Ann's parents, Nicholas (deceased) and Natalie, came from the Ukraine. In June 1969, they moved into a mobile home on the farm. Ann has her Bachelor of nursing degree from the University of Manitoba, and was a public health nurse of Virden Health Unit until May, 1971.

Ed has his private pilot's license and he and Ann attend flying events in the province and elsewhere in their four-place Cessna 172 aircraft.

They are members of the Manitoba Flying Farmers, an organization promoting the use of aircraft in agriculture and encouraging safe flying and improved airstrips.

Gordon Eugene died accidentally in September, 1968. His wife, Amelia, is now residing in The Sherwood, a senior citizens' home in Virden. Daughter Ellen (Mrs. Vernon Turner), is living at Salmon Arm, B.C. Charles Kenneth is a radio-T.V. technician and is residing at Calgary, Alberta. His marriage to Margaret Smith ended in divorce in 1969. She has since remarried and their two sons, Marvin and Karl, are with her. Joyce (Mrs. Lloyd Williamson) lives on a farm at Belmont, Manitoba.

Another third generation farmer is LLOYD WILLIAMS, grandson of the late Wm. J. (Billie) and Edith Williams, and son of Norman and Ida Williams. Lloyd took part in 4H Beef Clubs, taking the grand champion twice, and also winning trips and trophies. He completed grade XII. Commercial at Virden Collegiate Institute and then took the two-year Diploma Course in Agriculture at the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1964. He bought the home farm and married Carol Kyle of Two Creeks in l965. They have three children a daughter Lisa born in 1966, and two sons--Darwin born in 1967, and Kevin born in 1968.

Lloyd has cleared many acres of bluff and stones and has made his, one-and-a-half sections into a productive unit. He is also involved in a hog enterprise. He has a private pilot's license and owns a two-place aircraft. He is a member of the Manitoba Flying Farmers,

One sister, one of twin girls, married James Wardle, or wardell as James referred to be called, in 1894. They lived on the W. J. Gyles property for about six years. Their two eldest children were born here, Lewis the eldest, and their daughter Ethel.

Horse traders appeared on the scene about this time, 1895. Negros brought in strings of horses from Montana and elsewhere, tied head to tail, broken and semi-broken broncos, mainly. Indians were always ready to deal or trade and local dealers and traders appeared overnight. Jim Wardell was one of them. Mrs. Wardell often stated that not until her husband put the team away and took off his coat, could she be sure if the man was Jim. He never traded his shirt, but would trade his coat, usually an overcoat, anytime, in a horse trade.

Perhaps the next bachelor to come to Springvale to stay, was Wilmot Wardle. Bachelors came in almost every week, some just to look around, some with honest intentions of locating, then moved on and perhaps located elsewhere, some just came to loaf around for awhile and take a job, if available. Wilmot Wardle first came west from Barry, Simcoe County, Ontario to Wawanesa in 1882. He and a cousin had a chance offered them to attend two cars of stock and settlers effects being consigned to Gainsborough, Saskatchewan. As attendants were permitted transportation, one two each settler's car, it afforded these two eighteen-year-olds an opportunity to see the West, first-hand. The owner rode in state in a passenger car to the end of steel and made arrangements for unloading and hauling of the effects by ox team~ for the eighty miles overland to Gainsborough.

Six head of cattle and two pigs (one 400 pounds and the other a quite active 100 pounds) was headed d,) with.: trail with the two cousins in charge. They had received the owner's assurance that the ox teams would be following and would catch up with them before night-fall, with camping equipment, etc. Convivial friends met up with the owner, Mr. Routledge, and the boys were forgotten until the following day at noon. The boys, meanwhile, trudged along the trail, as directed, mostly concerned over the active pig. As night closed in and no wagons appeared, the boys decided to camp for the night \ with only a little fire to warm them, creek water to drink, and no food. They took turns sleeping and checking stock. Next morning they started again, as it was the easiest way. To keep all the stock together Trails branched off and each time, there was a debate which one to follow. By noon, both boys were sure that the wagons had taken another trail. However, the wagons did catch up to them by mid-afternoon and from there on to Gainsborough, only one incident marred the trip. The 400-pound pig so seriously cut her throat with her front hooves in crossing the Souris River that she had to be loaded on one of the wagons for the remainder of the journey. The boys heartily wished the 100-pound pig would do the same: After they had worked for Mr. Routledge for awhile, he gave them fare back to Ontario. Mr. Wardle came back to Gainsborough in 1883, worked around wherever he could, then filed on a homestead and got the necessary acres broken by trading work for the use of the necessary equipment. In 1884 he was hailed out, in 1885 frozen, in 1886 hailed out again, so he got out. He had heard of J. W. Younge and his herd of cattle at Virden, so came over to get ,a job. For eight winters and two summers, they worked together, as Mr. Younge's herd became larger and fully established. In 1896, Mr. Wardle returned to Gainsborough and was married to Mary Knisely, who had been teaching school for three years at Carnduff, Saskatchewan and Coultervale, Manitoba. Mr. and Mrs. Wardle were both of United Empire Loyalist stock.

Mrs. Wardle was also of pioneer stock. Her parents and family came to Brandon in 1882. She was educated in Brandon schools and attended the first Normal School class at the newly-opened Normal School in 1892.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Wardle, migrated across country, approximately sixty miles, from Gainsborough, Sask., to a rented farm in Springvale, for their honeymoon trip. They had all their worldly possessions loaded on one wagon, pulled by a team of horses. (Horses were becoming quite a usual thing by this time and gradually supplanted the ox teams entirely)~ They lived on this farm for two years, then purchase the N.E. 24-10-28 from Mr. Mattier and later the S.E. quarter from Mr. Peters. This became the home base for expanding operations and is still farmed by a grandson, Kenneth Wardle, with his wife and wee son. One quarter section as added to the east of the home half section and another half section, still in Springvale, the east half of 11-10-28, was acquired at a School Land's sale in 1908. All this land was virgin prairie. The first hundred acres were broken up by oxen, (the last ox team used in Springvale), the second hundred acres by horses, in 1910, and the third hundred in 1911 by steam tractor. Changes were coming thick and fast in farm methods during this period.

Among those who seriously settled in 1889, were Mr. Jas. Peters, a school teacher by profession, a fine scholarly gentleman, and his wife. Two children were born on this homestead until they sold out in 1898 to Mr. W. Wardle. Mr. Peters continued teaching at Elm Valley and Daybreak schools and many of the old-timers can look back to these days under his guidance instruction. This fine old gentleman is still living and resides at Rapid City, Manitoba.

Very fine herds of cattle were more common now. Besides J. W. Younge's very fine herd of Shorthorns (one of the largest until dispersal), Mr. Penrose had a very fine herd of Herefords, W. Wardle acquired a find herd of Shorthorn cattle, and every farmer had a few head.

From 1900 on, the horse population grew by leaps and bounds. Improved and even registered stock was introduced. Many farmers by judicious management could raise colts and sell matched teams for 600 to 700 dollars per team Registered horses often sold for this amount for one individual. Importing from France, England and Scotland became a big business. Stallions of certain breeds valued as high as $5,000.0O were brought in. W. Wardle rose from five to eight colts per year, purebred and grade Clydesdales. He showed and won at many local fairs.

Mr. W. Williams and the Haskett Bros., favored the Percheron type and won many prizes. Grieves Bros., especially Robert, raised Clydesdales and showed at fairs for many years. Gordon Wardle followed his dad's footsteps with success, until he sold out his interest in horses in 1959. Of course, many very fine driving horses were raised and used in the district. With & drive of seven to twelve miles to any town, it became necessary for every family to have one or a pair of good drivers.

Mr. Arthur Williams may have been the first to drive a motor car, a 1908 Buick gas buggy. By 1916, quite a few Mac had made their appearance: Fords (Puddlejumpers) with brass trimmings, rests with red wheels, Overlands, E. M. F.'s (Every Morning Fixit) , Buicks, Maxwells, e.nd as the years went by, the brands we are all so familiar with. Roads were poor for cars. However, under C. E. Ivens as Reeve, Wallace municipality really stepped out in 1913 and 1914 to build roads and use gravel for maintenance. The war halted this, but after the war and for many years, Wallace held the lead for the longest mileage of gravelled and maintained roads. This, of course, was a boon to Springvale people.

By this time, Springvale had given up the hope of a railroad service. Twice the C. N. R. was surveyed through the district but the final survey was far to the south to get a satisfactory crossing of the Pipestone Creek. When the Daly Oilfield was established in 1951 and 1952, the road building was terrific and a standard of roads has been attained, that assures the entire district of all-weather roads the year round, except for unusual or abnormal conditions of a short duration.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shoemaker moved in and made their home on Section 15-10-28. They were elderly people and took very little interest in public affairs. Arthur Shoemaker and his family are now residing on this farm.

The decade from 1914 to 1924 encompassed the four years of the First World War and the six years of adjustment after. Before this was over, many young men went overseas and some did not come back. Farmerettes were as common as farmers. Some of these farmerettes became quite proficient at outdoor farm work and living. The roll of those enlisting quite good for a small district and contains 17 names 1914-1918: John J. Bailey Wounded Fred E. J. Bailey Killed in action " R. A. Storey Wounded, Walter Knisely, Wm. H~ Corfield Killed in action Gordon H. Simpson Wounded - seriously Norman Williams, Howard Wardle, James D. Anderson, Harry A. I Chapman - Wounded, Gordon El Wardle Decorated M. M. Sidney A. Storey Wounded J. Hamil Wounded, Hugh C. Cheaters Perdy Reichert; Frank Lovegrove Wounded, Robert Knotman Killed in action. Those on the roll for the Second World War, numbered seven, 1939 - 1945, Frank Lovegrove, William Gardiner, Reginald Doidge Wounded in action, Leonard Haskett, Maurice Lovegrove,

Clifford Reid Killed in action (son of Leslie Reid, nephew to Mrs. R. D. Penrose), Robert Mitchell Jr. (Ray)

The returning Veterans of the First War were held as occupation troops for some length of time and many did not return home for discharge until 1920. Meanwhile, the government set in motion an organization called the Soldier Settlement Board, to buy one quarter sections of land and equipment for the rehabilitation of any Veterans, who wished to avail themselves of this plan. There were many flaws and some skullduggery involved in the plan. First, it was pretty well conceded that one quarter section was not enough for a family to make headway on. Secondly, much second and third-rate quarters of land were bought by the government at too high a valuation. Too many land speculators unloaded poor saleable land to the S. S. B. for Veteran occupation. Prices of equipment and stock soared so that in the final analysis, the load of the loan was impossible to carry. As this was about the only program that was being offered the Veteran. Many Veterans accepted, who lacked experience and understanding of the load they were assuming. However, many did succeed and stay with the plan long enough to become owners, while many others gave up early.

J. Hardy and his English bride came in by the S. S. B. plan for Veterans and settled on the S. E. 18-10-27. He early decided that it would not work so moved away. Herbert Doidge, with his wife, son Reginald, and daughter.

They came to Springvale in April, 1939, from Calgary with one two-year old

Daughter, Marjorie. She is teaching school at McAuley, now. Two more daughters were born in Springvale. Donna is training for a nurse at Brandon General Hospital, and Elaine attends Virden Collegiate.

They took up farming on the late Jas. Williams' farm. Their first oil well was drilled in October, 1952 and the half section is all within the boundaries of the Daly oilfield, though the northeast quarter is reserved to the Crown for oil rights. John was employed in the oilfield production work a time.

One family that stirred up Springvale gossip and action on occasion, not because of the length of their stay, but because of the friction that they caused from time to time, was Lorre Rowan and his family who came in on the western edge of the district. Part of the land was in Arawana School - district and part in Springvale, so it was a toss-up which school the family would attend.

Mr. Rowan was a fiery, self-educated little man and had some very decided opinions on how his family should be educated and treated. He was always a thorn in the side of the school board, except when someone conceived the idea of putting him on the school board as a member. This was in the 1920 era, about 1922 to 1931.

Lorne had five boys and besides showing and acting belligerently on the:

Least provocation, taught his sons the art of boxing.

Merlin, Gordon, Ralph, Kenneth and Donald were the sons' names~ they moved

Into Elkhorn territory and from the little heard of them since, we presume they were quiet citizens and not as difficult to get along with as the; father was on occasion.

Mr. J. W. Younge acted as a councillor of Wallace Municipality for some years, and acted as one of the first directors of the Virden Agricultural Society. He was the first pioneer. Mr. Younge passed away in 1932 and his wife in 1934. They are buried in Kola cemetery. They left a family that has been noted earlier, but the next generation has not.

Anne has three daughters Katherine, Mary and Ruth, all living in the United States. George (Peter) has two daughters and three sons. Dorothy was married in 1957 to Geoffrey Simpson, son of Charles Simpson and has a wee daughter, Patricia. Laura is married and living in Brandon. Three sons, Joseph, William, and John have reached maturity and still work together. John Younge has two daughters, Mary, the oldest and Katherine. Katherine was married to Donald Angell in 1958 and they live on the old Younge homestead. Ruth, wife of John Naylen, has two daughters, Shirley and Norah and five sons, John, Gerald, Thomas, Patrick, and Peter--seven good reasons why she will be remembered in the future.

The Wardle generations are still around. Howard L. enlisted in the First in World War, as did Percy Reichert, although these two were never taken past the Brandon training camp. Howard was married to Mary McNeill in 1929 and after spending eleven years in Saskatchewan and B. C., nine years as a grain buyer, they returned to Virden in 1940. Their eldest daughter Marion, born in 1934 at Bents, near Rosetown, Saskatchewan, in the drought period, did not witness a normal spring until they moved to Salmon Arm, B. C. Marion married Paul Chegus and now resides in Winnipeg with two sons and one daughter. Laura, the second daughter, was born in Salmon Arm, B. C., in 1938. She married Glenn Horn of an old pioneer family of Virden and they made their home in Cromer with one wee son Douglas.

Howard Wardle was employed by the Wallace Consumer Co-op for eight years and worked with Mr. Wm. McLean. Then for twelve years, he was employed in the oil patches of Manitoba in crude oil production.

She married PRINCE-PHILIP MOUNTBATTEN, THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH 11 20 1947 in Westminster, Abbey, London, England, son of PRINCE-ANDREW GREECE and PRINCESS BATTENBERG. He was born 01 10 1921 in Isle of Kerkira, Mon Repos, Corfu, Greece.

Notes for PRINCE-PHILIP MOUNTBATTEN, THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH:

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich, was born Prince of Greece and Denmark in Corfu on 10 June 1921; the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece. His paternal family is of Danish descent - Prince Andrew was the grandson of King Christian IX of Denmark. His mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg, the eldest child of Prince Louis of Battenberg and sister of Earl Mountbatten of Burma. Prince Louis became a naturalised British subject in 1868, joined the Royal Navy and rose to become an Admiral of the Fleet and First Sea Lord in 1914. During the First World War he changed the family name to Mountbatten and was created Marquess of Milford Haven. Prince Philip adopted the family name of Mountbatten when he became a naturalised British subject and renounced his Royal title in 1947.

Prince Louis married one of Queen Victoria's granddaughters. Thus, The Queen and Prince Philip both have Queen Victoria as a great-great-grandmother. They are also related through his father's side. His paternal grandfather, King George I of Greece, was Queen Alexandra's

HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; Consort of Queen Elizabeth II. Philip spent his childhood in England at the home of his uncle, Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, and began a naval career in 1939, when he entered the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.

He served in both the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters during World War II and married the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947, at which time he was named Duke of Edinburgh. In 1957 he was created Prince of the United Kingdom. Prince Philip, and active advocate of sports, science and education has made many goodwill trips throughout the world, both as representative of and in company with Queen Elizabeth. Before his marriage he was simply: Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. He was naturalized as a British citizen in 1947. His title: Baron of Greenwich, Earl of Merioneth and Duke of Edinburgh; Granted the style and titular dignity of a Prince of the United Kingdom on 22 Feb 1957. He was born as: HRH Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark.

There was not actual divorce between Prince Philip's parents, but they separated while Philip was still a small boy. His father took off to indulge himself in the fleshpots of Monte Carlo while his mother lived in turn with her four daughters, all of whom had married German Princelings. Philip was taken care of by his Mountbatten relatives in England, who also paid for his schooling. As a result of the family split, World War II found Philip serving in the British Navy while his brothers-in-law were fighting on the side of Germany. Philip was a baby of only eighteen months, fifth in line of succession to the Greek throne, when his family had to flee into exile.

The was 1922 and Greece was under the heels of a revolutionary junta. Philip's father, Prince Andrew, was arrested and tossed into jail. Others who opposed the new regime had already been summarily executed and Andrew seemed assured of the same fate. Philip's mother left the family's island home on Corfu and journeyed to Athens in an attempt to save her husband. She appealed for help to her cousin, England's King George V.

He dispatched a British secret-service agent, Commander Gerald Talbot, to Athens with instructions to negotiate Prince Andrew's release or, if that failed, to rescue him from prison. After much ado, the family was finally saved. Prince Philip was born Philippos Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderbert-Glucksburn, Prince of Greece. Philippos became Philip during schooldays in England. He took the name, Mountbatten when he relinquished his Greek Title to take British citizenship prior to marrying Elizabeth. His own choice of name was actually Philip Oldcastle, but he was finally prevailed upon to take the Mountbatten surname of his mother's family. Elizabeth calls him, "Darling" in private and he is "Papa" to his sons and daughter. His aides address him as "Sir". To everyone else, he is or should be, "Your Royal Highness" the first time he is addressed and "Sir" thereafter. Occupation listed on his passport is given as: Prince of the Royal Household. Philip is 5'11 1/2" (nearly 6ft.) tall.

Edinburgh, previous creations: In 1726 PRINCE FREDERICK, the eldest son of the future GEORGE II, had conferred on him among other titles the Dukedom of Edenburgh [sic]. On his predeceasing his father (who by now had ascended the throne) in March 1750/1 this particular title passed to his eldest son the future GEORGE III, although the ones traditionally associated with the Heir Apparent reverted to the Crown (see PRINCE OF WALES, subsections on the titles of Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall and Earl of Chester, also the Scottish titles of the Heir Apparent). When GEORGE III became King the Dukedom merged with the Crown. The title was revived, more conventionally spelled this time and in tandem with a Dukedom of Gloucester, for GEORGE III's younger brother in 1764 but expired on the death without issue of the 2nd Duke, the grantee's only son, in 1834. In 1866 a Dukedom of Edinburgh was conferred on PRINCE ALFRED, QUEEN VICTORIA's second son. Having turned down the offer of the Crown of Greece four years earlier and having had the offer of the Crown of Spain turned down on his behalf by his mother and her ministers two years after his elevation to the peerage, he succeeded his uncle ERNEST II as reigning DUKE OF SAXE COBURG AND GOTHA in 1893 but died without surviving male issue in 1900, when his peerage titles expired.

Romanovs find closure in DNA

Two years ago, the heavy Italian marble top was lifted off the coffin in St. Petersburg of Grand Duke Georgij Romanov, the 28-year-old brother of Tsar Nicholas II, who died of tuberculosis in 1899. It was yet another dramatic event in the quest to resolve the bitter controversy surrounding the murdered last tsar and his family, whose grave was discovered in 1991. Any lingering doubts from the earlier genetic analysis of the remains1 will be dispelled by the investigation of the grand duke's DNA by Ivanov et al.2 appearing on page 417.

Almost 300 years of Romanov rule ended in 1917, culminating in the Bolshevik uprising. The following year, Nicholas II and his family were imprisoned in the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg, Siberia. On the night of July 16, Nicholas, Empress Alexandra, their five children -- Olga, Tatiana, Marie, Anastasia and Alexei, their physician and three servants were executed by a firing squad, a hail of bullets ricocheting off the grand duchesses' jewel-laden corsets3. The local newspaper proclaimed that Nicholas had been "shot without bourgeois formalities but in accordance with our new democratic principles."3

Six months later, a Russian investigator named Nicholas Sokolov recovered valuable pieces of physical evidence from the probable grave site, but found no skeletons. His conclusion that the bodies had been doused in sulphuric acid, butchered and burned to ashes was seldom questioned during 70 years of communist rule. But in April 1989, the Moscow News published an exclusive interview with filmmaker Geli Ryabov, who announced that he knew where the Romanovs were buried. Ryabov and geologist Alexander Avdonin had actually located the grave ten years earlier, five miles from the Sokolov site. Working from photographs and the Kremlin report of Yakov Yurovsky, the executioners' leader, they had retrieved three skulls, only to return them fearfully to the ground the following year.

In July 1991, President Boris Yeltsin authorized the exhumation at Yekaterinburg. Almost 1,000 bone fragments were assembled into five female and four male skeletons. That meant that two of the deceased were missing, consistent with Yurovsky's account that he had burned two of the bodies (those of Alexei and a female). But there was disagreement about which bodies were present. Using photographic superimposition, Russian scientists concluded that the tsarevich and Marie were missing. However, an invited American forensic team, led by William Maples of the University of Florida, analysing the dental and bone specimens, believed that the missing grand duchess was Anastasia. At a conference the following summer, a Russian expert on DNA fingerprinting, Pavel Ivanov, announced that DNA tests on the bones would be conducted in collaboration with Peter Gill, at the British Forensic Science Service. On 15 September 1992, Ivanov was welcomed at Heathrow Airport by a BBC television director, who had hired a funeral hearse because he felt it was 'inappropriate to carry the Russian Imperial family in the boot of my Volvo.'

Gill performed nuclear and mitochondrial (mt) DNA tests on the nine bone samples1. Five of the bodies were clearly related, and three were female siblings. Furthermore, a sample of maternally inherited mtDNA suspected to belong to Alexandra matched a sample provided by her grandnephew, the Duke of Edinburgh. But finding a reference sample for Nicholas was more difficult. Ivanov's suggestion to exhume Grand Duke Georgij at that time was financially and politically inconceivable; a swatch from a bloody handkerchief kept in a Japanese museum was too contaminated; and the tsar's nephew, Tikhon Kulikovsky, refused to cooperate, citing his contempt for the British for not offering refuge to his uncle's family after the revolution. But eventually, two more distant maternal relatives, Xenia Sfiri and the Duke of Fife, agreed to help.

Position 16169: As expected, the mtDNA sequences of the tsar's two relatives were identical to each other, but where the relatives had a T at nucleotide 16169, the bone mtDNA surprisingly had a C. Further analysis revealed a mixture of mtDNAs in the bone differing at this one position -- C accounting for about 70%. Gill and colleagues thus concluded that the tsar exhibited 'heteroplasmy', and cautiously estimated the probability of the remains belonging to the tsar as being 98.5%1. Their findings "have never been challenged or even mildly criticized, in print or orally, by another DNA scientist," states historian Robert Massie3. Moreover, independent confirmation was provided by Cambridge University's Erika Hagelberg. But critics including Maples charged that the discrepancy was likely due to contamination. Maples returned to Yekaterinburg in April 1993, where he was allowed to remove teeth from the skulls and pass them on to Mary-Claire King. (King's results have not been published, but she told Nature Genetics that, using a different technique4, her group found a convincing match for Alexandra and her grand niece. They also found C and T nucleotides at several sites in the DNA allegedly from Nicholas consistent with heteroplasmy, sequence background, or contamination.)

With the Russian Orthodox Church demanding more proof, the exhumation of Grand Duke Georgij finally occurred in July 1994. This time, Ivanov took the bone samples to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology DNA Identification Laboratory in Maryland, where remarkably, the same heteroplasmy provided compelling evidence favoring the identification of Tsar Nicholas. Grand Duke Georgij's mtDNA exhibits a similar rare mixture of C and T at position 16169 -- the first time that heteroplasmy has been applied in human identification. Combining the DNA sequence identity, the rarity of heteroplasmy and the established link between Alexandra and the Duke of Edinburgh, Ivanov et al. calculate a likelihood ratio for the remains' authenticity in excess of 100 million (ref. 2) -- not including the powerful anthropological and forensic evidence!

At last, the great mystery of the last tsar can be laid to rest. The same is now warranted for his family's remains, although further political and religious wrangling appears inevitable. Some people still might not accept the verdict while two bodies remain missing, even though the case for Anna Anderson, who claimed to be Anastasia, was dismissed by DNA analysis from several groups5. Clues to their identities and whereabouts might exist among the relics gathered by Sokolov, including a severed finger and bottles of congealed fat, now said to be held by the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. However, this should not detract from the resolution of the Romanov saga, or the power of genetic analysis to close one of the most astounding historical mysteries of this century.

Notes for HOWARD LORAINNE WARDLE:

Howard lived most of his life in Virden, Manitoba and was a Magistrate in the latter part of his life.

Children of HOWARD WARDLE and MARY MCNEILL are:

144. i. MARION LORRAINE42 WARDLE, b. 07 24 1934, Bents, Saskatchewan, Canada.

145. ii. LAURA ELLEN WARDLE, b. 10 16 1938, Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada.

He married (1) IOLA EDITH TOWNSEND. She was born 11 14 1926. He married (2) AMELIA ( MILLIE) KERR 1923. She was born 01 18 1903, and died 11 11 1975 in Virden, Manitoba, Canada.

Notes for GORDON EUGENE WARDLE:

Gordon E. Wardle, the second child in the W. Wardle family, was born and educated in Springvale. He enlisted in 1916, saw service in England and France and was awarded the Military Medal for action at Bourlon Wood in 1918. He returned to Canada in June 1919 as a 8ergeant of the 13th Platoon of the 78th Winnipeg Grenadiers.

He took over the old home farm in 1920 and, was married in 1923 to Miss Amelia Kerr of Ninette, Manitoba. Of this marriage, there are four living children, Edward, Ellen, Kenneth and Joyce. Gordon Wardle took an active interest in many affairs in various capacities through the years school trustee, and secretary-treasurer of the school, secretary of the Horse Club, first president of Hargrave Pool Elevator, first secretary of Wallace Consumers Co-cp., president and secretary of Virden Credit Union, director of Canadian Co-operative Implements, Ltd., director of Manitoba Fed. Assoc.C. District #4.

He also served for two years on a special Health and Welfare Survey Board. He has acquired the nickname of Co-op Wardle and little wonder. As a livestock breeder of cattle and more particularly, Clydesdale horses, Gordon made a notable contribution , as recorded earlier. In 1945, the west half of the old home farm section was added.

Joyce (Mrs. Lloyd Williamson) lives on a farm at Belmont, Man.

Children of GORDON WARDLE and AMELIA KERR are:

Notes for MYRTLE MAY MAUD WARDLE:

Dear Aunt Myrtle lived a wonderful and adventurous life. She passed away quietly with her son and daughter by her side. She was almost 99 years old.

Her son Bob Townson brought his piano with him to visit his mother and played special old time hyms that his mother loved so much. He did this 2 or 3 times a day while his mother lay quietly in her bed.

Her daughter Dorothy lovely took care of her in mother later years and brought her into her home where she lived a very happy and full life. She had many visitors from family and always was a joy to visit as she was always smiling with the contentment of knowing and being as peace with the Lord.

Myrtle was a very religious lady and a Salvation Army Officer as was her late husband Percy Townson.

Her funeral service was held at the Douglas Rd Citadel in Victoria, BC, Canada where family and friends attended.

Notes for IRENE MARY WARDLE:

Irene Mitchell (Wardle) was the fourth child. She graduated as a nurse and wedded Cleland Henry Frank Mitchell, son of Wm. and Mrs. Mitchell. Their history is recorded elsewhere in this biography.

Notes for CLELAND-5 HENRY FRANK MITCHELL:

Cleland, the eldest son, was always the active, athletic type, with the red in his hair. He participated in anything wholesome in work or play. He married Irene Wardle, a nurse by profession, who still nurses others, as well as Cle Mitchell. They had five daughters, no sons, much to Cle's disappointment. They farmed on the southeast fringe of the district and have always taken an active part in Springvale and Woodnorth Community.

Yes even Virden doings have received support and attention from Cle Mitchell. Cle is a strong believer in Co-operative action and backs up his belief by positive action. Both he and his wife have taken a very active part in the Co-operative store and Virden Credit Union and have served on both Boards for many years in different capacities. Their three eldest daughters are married, one in Manitoba, one in Saskatchewan and one in British Columbia, so one might truthfully say they are scattered. The two youngest attend school in Woodnorth.

Notes for PRINCE-CHARLES PHILIP ARTHUR WINDSOR:

Charles was born on a Sunday at 9:14 pm and weighed 7lb. 6oz. HRH The Prince of Wales. When Elizabeth II ascended the throne, Charles automatically became Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Great Steward of Scotland, Knight of the Garter.

Charles was christened: Charles Philip Arthur George. He was created Prince of Wales in 1958 and invested as such in 1969 on his coming of age.

He assumed his seat in the House of Lords in February 1970 and became the first to the British Crown to earn a university degree when he was graduated with honors from the University of Cambridge in June 1970. University of Cambridge in June 1970. Like his father, he should properly be addressed as "Your Royal Highness" the first time and "Sir" thereafter. He does not care to be called, Prince (an American custom). He thinks it makes him sound like a police dog. He doesn't mind being called Charles or Charlie. Charles is an opera lover and is president of the Friends of the Royal Opera House. He is 5' 11" tall.

Notes for LADY DIANA FRANCES SPENCER:

Lady Diana Spencer (before her marriage to Charles) was popularly known as: "Shy Di". Diana Spencer's ancestry (through her father) links her with more than one King and she and Prince Charles are 16th cousins, once removed.

Diana weighed 7 lbs. 12 oz. at birth. She is 5' 10" tall, has blond hair and blue eyes. Diana's descent from Frank Work links her with many famous Americans: George Washington, John Adams (2nd U.S. Pres.), The Roosevelt family, Calvin Coolidge, John Pierpont Morgan, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Louisa M. Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Gloria Vanderbilt, Erle Stanley Gardner, General George Patton, George Gallup (of Gallup polls fame) Nelson Bunker Hunt, Orson Welles, Humphrey Bogart and Lee Remick, among others. Their engagement was announced by Buckingham Palace on 24 February 1981.

As Lady Diana Spencer, daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer (1924-92) and his first wife, Frances Roche (1936- ), she married Prince Charles in 1981; they separated in 1993 and divorced in 1996.

She was killed in a car crash in Paris, with her companion Dodi Fayed.

An icon of fashion and a woman of remarkable beauty, she enhanced the images of many charities, especially those concerned with the victims of AIDS and landmines.

She controversially made public her own frailties, including adultery and an eating disorder, her anguish over Prince Charles's relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, and her disapproval of the Palace establishment.

Her premature death caused an unprecedented display of public grief, her funeral procession being witnessed by a sombre crowd estimated at 2 million and a TV audience of some 2.6 billion worldwide. Some public disquiet arising from the apparent indifference shown by members of the House of Windsor to Diana's death, encouraged by critical remarks made by Earl Spencer at his sister's funeral, resulted in a number of changes in royal protocol aimed at modernizing the monarchy.
