My site is on my craft which is Hand Carved Hiking and Walking Sticks. All my hiking and walking sticks are hand carved.  Each one has it's own unique look and feel.

I do not cut branches for trees or cut trees down. Mother Nature is more then generous in supply me with an abundance of downed wood. All the wood I use is already on the ground or from the countless beautiful beaches of Vancouver Island.. I  have travel all over Vancouver Island scouring the beaches looking for just the right pieces of wood.

Most of the downed wood I find is still very green and must be dried. So I look for wood that will dry and not crack.

I prefer to Carve with, Alder, Maple, Western Yew and sometimes Arbutus. I clean an area to carve in, by removing some bark with a spear point blade. I use a variety of hand carving tools. After carving with my hand tools, I hand sand the stick.

After the stick is sanded I hand polish it with a natural wax to give it that look of morning dew.

I hand drill a hole through the top of the stick for a leather thong. In addition to being of convenience for the hiker, by placing a hole near the top of the stick reduces the checking and cracking of the wood.

A new addition to my selection of sticks is the Wilderness Survival Stick.

The Survival Hiking Sticks have a Compass in the top, a jackknife and a whistle to call for help with. If by chance a person gets turned around or disoriented and off course in the woods this handy Survival Stick just may save your life.
