Automobile License Plates
Highest Alberta Plate Issues
cFlat's World

In the spring of 1997, the Alberta government announced that they would start using certain vowels in Alberta motor vehicle license plates (i.e. "A", "E", and "U"..."I" is too much like the digit one and "O" is too much like zero). Actually, a couple of years ago they started back at "AAA 000" but now they are continuing with vowels in the "T" series.

Plates have a general format of "XXX 999" where XXX represents letters and 999 represents numbers. The current plate has a white background with red lettering and features Alberta's wild rose. By using vowels, the life of the current plate is extended by aprox. 10 years. The government has started back at "AAB 000".

The following are the highest sightings we have made to date:

By the way, in Alberta there are several different series of the licence plates that get issued. The series above is, of course for private, general public vehicles. The following is a list of the other series that I have observed.

Private, general public:
XXX-999
3 alphabetic (except I and O), space, 3 digits.
Rentals (old):
D99999
"D", 5 digits.
Rentals (new):
X-99999
1 alphabetic, 5 digits.
Commercial (old):
9-99999 or
9-9999
1 digit, dash, 6 digits. This format seems to be replaced by the new format below.
Commercial (new):
99-X999
2 digits, dash, 1 alphabetic, 3 digits.
Handicapped:
AAA-XXX
Designates a handicapped vehicle. Regular series plates can become handicapped plates with the addition of a wheelchair
sticker.
Farm:
99-X999
(with sticker)
Farm plates are currently designated by a sticker applied to the top right corner of the current issue plates. The sticker consists of the word FARM in yellow on a green background.
