Automobile License Plates
License Plates: Ham Radio

Ham Radio License Plates
Amateur Radio callsign plates were the first custom plates in Alberta. The motor vehicles department issues them free of charge to licensed amateurs. This allows rapid identification of experienced radio operators in case of emergency.

A stipulation of receiving your amateur license is that the Crown is entitled sieze control of your station as well as the operator for any period of time it requires. Amateur radio operators often provide backup to emergency communication systems in time of emergency.

Due to the nature of amateur radio (a large number of private individuals working for a common goal) amateurs can even end up being the only means of communication in and out of disaster areas when commercial systems fail. -Contributed by James Ewen (VE6SRV).

Amateur Radio Callsign Lookup
You can lookup a Ham radio operator's callsign through the following:

QRZ Callsign Database.

Just enter the callsign (e.g. VE6SRV) and the operator's name and other information is displayed.
