Vancouver Japanese Gardeners Association (V.J.G.A.)

Our History

The Vancouver Japanese Gardeners Association was founded in 1959, and we  successfully celebrated our 45th anniversary at the Chateau Whistler Resort in 2004.  Currently there are 60 members in the association (including retired members) engaging in various types of residential/commercial maintenance and landscape construction throughout the lower mainland.

Our Association Created:

Public gardens in the Vancouver area which have come about as a result of the member's efforts can be seen at Zuiko-en in New Westminster, the Momiji Garden located on the P.N.E. grounds, and the Hope Japanese Garden.  The Nikkei Garden on Kingsway was also constructed with the association's input and effort.

2005 Winners of Sumi Award

  The most important event for our association is the Sumi Awards. This event gives our members an opportunity to showcase their skill and hard work.  On one weekend in August garden tours are held to identify those individuals setting the standard to which other members can aspire.  There are different categories including residential / commercial maintenance, landscape and unique features.  Judging is performed both by members and invited guests who have relevant experience in the landscape industry.
