History of View Royal Public Library Association

View Royal was served by book mobile service prior to having its own library.

The View Royal Public Library opened on Oct. 17, 1971 as a centennial project to commemorate British Columbia joining Confederation. 2000 books were collected in a book drive and other books were purchased with donations.

The Town of View Royal was incorporated in 1988. Since that time, the library has received yearly grants from the town and the provincial government. The low operating budget is stretched to buy new books and other items as no staff salaries are paid. All the people who buy the books, prepare them for circulation, and check out the books are volunteers.

In June 1997, the new town hall was opened and the View Royal Public Library moved to the lower level. At this time a public internet computer was set up for patron use. This proved to be very popular.

The View Royal Public Library is not affiliated with Greater Victoria Public Library or with Vancouver Island Regional Library.
