Vancouver Island Jack Russell Terrier Club

Activities

RACING: Up to 4 terriers are loaded into a start gate. The dogs are teased with a fake fur fox tail, and then the gate is opened. The fox tail is pulled by a motor down the course and through a hole in a foam wall (barrier) at the end. The first dog through the hole is the winner. At a Fun Day, the course may or may not have hurdles, depending on the age and experience of the dogs. Any dogs over 6 months of age must wear a muzzle to protect the dogs and the catchers at the end of the race. For a full list of racing rules click here.

GO-TO-GROUND: A wooden tunnel is laid out and scented with quary droppings. The terrier must navigate his way through the tunnel until he locates the quary, and then he must "work" the quary for 30 - 60 seconds. The quary is caged with food, water and bedding, and is also protected by a plexiglass shield in front of the cage. Once the dog has worked the quary for the required time, the top of the tunnel is opened and the dog is removed by his handler. This is the true test of a terrier's worth, and it's exciting to see their natural instincts kick in.

LURE-COURSING: A course is laid out with pulleys, connected by a line that is controlled by a motor. A plastic bag ("bunny") is attached to the line, and the dog chases the bunny around the course. If your dog loves to chase, this is the sport for you - and the best part is, any dog can try it!

What you need to know:
Like always, we need "people power" to put these events on. Please do not be shy; drop us a line to ask what you can do to help. We need people to set up, man events, run a coffee urn and break down at the end of the day.
