GEOGRAPHY ACTIVITIES GEOGRAPHY MAPPING

Play a game of Battleship to learn about grid.  Here's one on line  Game

Do a map of your classroom - use the
floor tiles to establish the grid - tiles
are one foot by one foot in size.
Establish 0 and 0 and mark it with a
felt tip marker.

Do a map of your school and yard - it would be an overhead view and you would have to use an area map for a good North/South East/West orientation.  The map would be bounded on the north by the sidewalk between our school and Meyokumin, the east fence, the sidewalk to the south of St. Richards and the west sidewalk running beside our school.  See the map below for a sample.   We will provide the paper.  You can pace off the distances with your widest step representing one meter.   MAP  Here are some samples.
Do a map of your neighborhood

This is a sample

Use a neighborhood map to start

Break all these maps into regions, ie. playground, grass, bare eroded earth, trees, shrubs, etc.  ethnic origin
Make a Mercator Projection using a quartered orange peel - students can trace the orange as it is passed around.
