A Bit about Me:

This is me. Hello,

My name is Gary, born in 1951, carpenter by profession and now run a small apartment building.

I became a ham in 1989.  In the first few years of being a ham, I was overly occupied with the hobby, much to the concern of my wife.  Sound familiar?  Gradually my interests shifted more to the computer,  and recently back to amateur radio.

I do most of my computing in Linux now and thought I'd share how I backup my Linux box.

My QTH, (location is) Victoria, B.C.   This is on the West Coast of Canada, on Vancouver Island, about 75 miles north-west of Seattle.  When at the radio my favourite mode of operation is CW on the 15-meter band.  Lately, I have not been very radio active, but perhaps that will soon change.   If you hear me on the air, break-in and say hello!

I thought I'd add something to the ham community by making a web presence.  So...

  • If you are thinking of becoming a Ham, check out my "How to"!
  • If you are a ham and interested in a cheap effective 2 meter antenna look into my "Quad Plans".

Plans for my 2 meter Quad:

This is my 2 meter Quad, which is mounted above my tribander.  Made of wood and wire it's not "high-tech", but It's cheap, easy to construct and works well.  I use a wooden mast (about 8 foot) jammed into the open end of the tribander mast.  Bear in mind a wooden mast is prone to breakage in a high wind.   You may want to reinforce where it joins the metal mast, or use a different non-inductive material such as fiberglass.

My 2 meter quad. I got to get a better picture!
