Val Wuorinen worked at the Workers' Compensation Board of British Columbia as an accident prevention officer and was promoted to education manager before joining the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety in Hamilton, Ontario, as a scientist specializing in safety management. For eight years he was a part-time faculty member in the Occupational Health and Safety Technology Program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. He was designated a Canadian Registered Safety Professional in 1979.
Dr. Wuorinen is now a self-employed safety consultant and has served as a volunteer adviser for the Canadian Executive Service Organization. He is registered as a WorkSafe Education Partner with the WCB, authorized to conduct all WorkSafe courses. He is also the author of The Employer's Health and Safety Manual - Alberta, published by Carswell in 1995.
Val was raised in Kaministiquia, Ontario and attended Scarborough Collegiate Institute near Toronto. After graduation he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as a pilot. During the next 27 years he flew over 5000 hours in 18 types of aircraft including night fighters, bombers and transports. He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration and clasp and the Special Service Medal (NATO). His last tour of duty was served as the university liaison officer (University of Victoria) at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, B.C.
As a part-time student, he earned a B.A. degree from Carleton University and an M.A. from the University of Victoria. Awarded a National Research Council Scholarship, he completed his doctorate in geomorphology at the University of Victoria following his retirement from the RCAF.
