Rules
& Conduct
Be
Civil: Always be respectful toward other writers.
Disputes should be handled civilly or via email. Abusive behaviour
will not be tolerated.
Be
Patient:
When waiting for a response, be patient. Our members live
in different time zones, work different hours, and real life
often has a habit of rearing its ugly head. If you are going
to be away, be polite and post that you are going to be unavailable.
If the person you're writing with is going to be offline for
an extended period of time, wait patiently or write your character
on and take up with them at a later date. Pressing for a reply
is rude and can be very annoying.
Biographies:
A bio must be submitted before you can begin writing. If you
require help creating a bio, you may refer to the Creating
a Bio page, or request aid from the staff in the OOC folder.
Baddies:
Let's face it, playing a baddy is fun, but you should be cautious
when doing so. If an obviously evil character struts down
the centre of town, chances are people are going to attack
it. Randomly attacking or killing people in a populated area
will also attract unwanted attention and likely end your character
dead or in prison.
Coarse
Language: While coarse language is not strictly prohibited,
it should be used maturely and with moderation. Excessive
swearing cheapens the quality of your posts and may be bothersome
to other writers. There is no need for swearing in the OOC
folders.
Combat:
When engaging in combat with another writer, remember to play
fair. Your character may swing at another, but you must leave
it up to the other writer to decide if the blow landed and
how much damage was done. Under no circumstances may you kill
another's character without their prior permission. When in
doubt, ask.
Editing
Bios: Edits to Abilities and Magical Items (including
enchanted weapons and armour) must be added to the bio in
a separate post in the original thread so that it is bumped
for approval and brought to the attention of all members.
In other words, reply to your original bio and place the additions
in the new posts well as adding them to the original
post. If members aren't made aware of the changes, they won't
be able to respect your character's abilities.
Editing
Posts: It is quite common for writers to make mistakes
in their posts. If this occurs, it is advisable you post a
polite request for an edit in the Plotting & Story Discussion
folder. If you edit your post in a way that changes the meaning
or effects how another will reply, you must bring this
edit to the other writer's attention.
Environment
and Setting: UL is a fantasy land based neither on
history nor a novel. Please take this into consideration.
Some things to remember are that there is no gunpowder, rifles
or canons. Futuristic storylines are strictly prohibited.
Conan didn't have an AK-47 and neither should your characters.
God
Modding is absolutely forbidden. Forms of God Modding
include:
-
Writing
how another character reacts or speaking for them. This
is considered extremely rude. When your character is interacting
with another character allow the other writer to respond
in his own way.
It's their character and should be left to write him as
intended.
-
Healing
another character without their permission is also a form
of God Modding. Often characters carry injuries to aid
their storylines. A healer may attempt to heal that character's
wounds, but they must leave it up to the other writer
to decide if and how much of the healing worked.
-
Attacking
another character without giving them the opportunity
to respond. During melee situations, you may attack another
character, but must leave it up to your opponent to decide
how much damage was done, or if at all. Under no circumstance
can you kill another character without the writer's permission.
-
Giving
your character items and abilities without explanation.
Unless a special ability is mentioned in your character's
bio, you cannot use it. This also goes for weapons and
magical items. If you cannot explain reasonably how your
character acquired them, you cannot use them. If your
character takes a weapon off another, unless their ability
to wield it is stated in their bio, they cannot use it.
- Stating
that your character had an item or spell cast all along
is another form of God Modding. If we didn't see your character
cast that spell in a previous thread, it doesn't exist.
Also, having your character cast small spells is acceptable,
but if he casts a major spell, it must be listed
in his bio.
-
Having
your character acquire information or knowledge without
a logical reason why. They cannot hear a whisper over
loud music, or suddenly know what's happening in the
room above. And unless your character has x-ray vision,
they should not be aware of hidden weapons or items
another character is carrying.
-
Making
your character a god, god-like or giving them extremely
powerful abilities. If you do give your character a powerful
ability, be certain to also give him a weakness. For example,
if your character can heal all wounds in an instant, place
a limitation on them by stating this can only be done
once a day.
-
There
is one exception to GMing. If a member leaves the forum
or is banned permanently, their characters may be killed
or written out of a storyline without their prior permission.
This is to avoid storylines from hanging. We ask that
if a member wants to avoid this action they should wind
up their storylines themselves.
Know
your Neighbour/Enemy: When writing with another
member, be respectful and read their character's biography.
It will help you to visualize them and understand their
personality. You will also learn their weaknesses and strengths.
There is a wealth of information to be found, so don't waste
it.
Leaving/Banning:
If a member leaves The Unknown Lands, we ask that they wind
up all storylines and write their characters out of whatever
threads they are currently in. This is to avoid ruining
threads for the remaining members. If you fail to do this
or are permanently banned, your characters may be GMd out
of the storyline and even possibly killed off. Abandoned
characters are fair game.
Rating
System: In the name of creative expression, we
strive to avoid censorship. If you are sensitive to some
situations, we ask that you read with caution. As a guideline,
we rate our writing PG-13 (may contain
violence, coarse language and/or mild sexual situations).
If you are going to write a controversial scene (rape, racism,
torture, etc.) we ask that you place a warning at the top
of your post so member are forewarned.
Sexual
Situations: Mild sexual scenes are not prohibited,
but should be kept PG 13. Detailed and explicit sexual actions
may only be posted in the Behind Closed Doors folder. This
is a private folder that is not accessible to all members.
For more information, look in Folder
Descriptions. Please ensure that the person you
are writing with is comfortable writing an erotic scene
with you before starting a thread in this folder! Members
abusing or found writing only in this folder will
have their access removed. UL is NOT an adult forum.
Storylines:
Members are welcome to start a storyline whether it's on
their own for with another character. The only restriction
is on major storylines that will effect all members (war,
famine, plague, etc.). Storylines of that magnitude must
meet with the staff approval before they can be undertaken.
Take
me to the King: One of the more common occurrences
in RP is people marching up to the palace gates and demanding
to see the King. Let's face it, that's not very realistic.
The King is a busy man and greatly protected. If your character
feels he needs to speak to someone official, there are chancellors
who will see to his needs, but know that there may well
be a wait. Only officials and dignitaries are rushed to
the front of the queue.
