Headpin

Instead of looking at the pins, the best 5 pin bowlers use the arrows on the lane as targets.  The center arrow is the most popular target used.  This center arrow is directly on a line to the headpin.  Because the arrow is closer (at 15 feet) than the pins (at 60 feet) it is easier to hit.

You don't have to worry about your ball going in a perfectly straight line and punching the headpin.  The friction of the lane will move your ball a little left or right to get it on the side of the headpin.   The above series of pictures shows the path that the ball follows using the centre arrow as a target.  In this case the bowler throws a backup ball (for a right handed bowler that is a ball that breaks right) and the ball will make a slight movement to the right as it nears the pins.

Spot bowling is a very accurate method of bowling and it is a particularly good way of picking corner pins
