Being a commercial filmmaker, it's a great challenge to try to do stuff that's creative.

Spike Lee spoke of his artistic family influence, and the road which led to his success as a director. Not always an easy road Lee demonstrated the value of going after what you want, and not compromising yourself.

Included was a film made up of a number of entertaining Lee-directed commercials, mostly for Nike (some starring the Lee character, Mars Blackmon,) and a music video of Michael Jackson in Brazil, "They don't care about us."

Spike has put an effort into making a social statement, and for the most part has done a very good job at it. When Malcolm X was in danger of being cut by a half hour, he approached friends, Bill Cosby, Oprah, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Tracy Chapman, the artist formally known as Prince, and Janet Jackson to raise the funds to keep the film a full three hours. Lee has sure come a long way since his first efforts to raise capital for his film!
