General Information
French policy initially allowed narrow gauge lines in 750mm and metre, however pressure from the Military made metre gauge compulsory in 1888. Later 600mm lines were allowed. source
War Department Light Railways - French military railways After WW1, north eastern France was totally destroyed. Towns were crushed by shell fire, leaving no roads, no railways and no soil on the ground! In 1919, all the military equipment came under control of the French government ("Ministčre des régions libérées"). Quickly, this ministry understood that, where there were no roads, light railway equipment could be of great interest to rebuild the "Red Zone" (the fighting zone). So, in Pas de Calais, Somme, Oise, Aisne, Ardennes, Meuse and Moselle, military railways became a part of civilian life from 1920 to 1926 or 1930. source

It should be noted that the Deutsche Reichsbahn (Germany State Railways) grouped all their steam locos into classes 01-99, with *all* narrow gauge locos under class "99". So a 99 class loco could include anything from a little 0-4-0 tank, up to a massive 2-10-2T, plus Mallets, Meyers and even Double-Fairlies! Also the Austrian State Railways were part of the DR from 1938 to 1945, with the same classification system. Brian Rumary, England posting on On3 group

Muskau Forest Railway - 600mm - industrial - curently tourist line - founded in 1895. This 600 mm (23 5/8") forest railway assisted in the opening of many small factories, coalmines and other businesses in the area between Weisswasser and Muskau. The railway subsequently expanded greatly and made an essential contribution to the industrialisation of the region. After the initial use of horses steam locomotives were employed, along with many wagons, for the transport of coal and wood. The railway however never operated a passenger service. source
Ortelsburger Kleinbahn (Myszyniec in Poland) - 600mm - military/common carrier - closed - built as a German military line in the First World War, south from Spychowo (then named Puppen) to Grabowo (68km) near Ostroleka, with a 42km branch to Kolno and a branch off that running 34km to Nowogrod. There were other short branches. After the war the border between Germany and Poland severed the line and the 16km northern end, from Puppen to Friedrichshof (Rozogi) was operated by the Ostpreussische Kleinbahn AG as the Ortelsburger Kleinbahn, while the southern part of the network, from Myszyniec south to Grabowo, the Kolno branch and the Nowogrod branch (extended by 15km to Lomza) was operated by PKP. The Rozogi - Myszyniec section was not used but remained in place, and when the Germans invaded at the start of WWII the lines became one system again. After the war the whole system was in Poland and operated by PKP. Spychowo - Myszyniec closed in 1962 and the rest of the system in 1973.

Pilion Railway - 600mm - 1890 - The Pilion railway was built in the period from 1881 until 1903. The part Volos-Lechonia was finished in 1896 and the part Lechonia-Milies in 1903. The railway used several steam engines; among the last ones (the longest surviving) were two of Belgian origin: "Milies", built in Tubize in 1903, and "Jason", built in Haine St-Pierre in 1912. More information about these old engines can be found on the very interesting website of the Greek Association of the Friends of the Railway. Between WWI and WWII the railway played an important role in the economic development of the Pilion region. In the beginning of the 1970's the railway was abandoned foe economic reasons. In 1985, the railway was recognized as a historical monument and preservation work began. source

Almamellék System (ÁEV 09) - 600mm - 8km narrow gauge, not electrified This is the last "real" 600mm line left in Hungary. It runs from Almamellék to Lukafa and Sasrét. source
Nagybörzsöny Forestry Railway - 600mm - Originally built in 1907 in three sections where one end of the line was in Slovakia. It was a 600mm (2"0") horse drawn railway using 20-30 horses to draw the wagons uphill. After WWI the border was closed and the line extend towards an existing 760mm (2'6") line. It was relaid to the same gauge and became a steam drawn service. In the 1930s they had 2 internal combustion engine locomotives. Regular passenger traffic started in 1970s as timber traffic declined. At the upper end of the line there are two reversing stations. Luckily when the line was sloced in 1976, the track was not allowed to be removed on environmental grounds. The line is due to reopen as a tourist railway. source

600mm (60cm) gauge was in use in parts of the subcontinent (a small section in Rangoon, another in western Pakistan / Afghanistan, and in the Pakistan Forestry division of Changa-manga). It was never very widespread in India; examples include the private network used by Coal India's collieries near Nagpur, the works of the engineering firm Larsen and Toubro at Bombay, etc. Locos from Hunslet, Baldwin, etc. were used on this network from around 1910 or earlier, and some were in operation until the early 1970s. A 600mm gauge loco was also used during the Calcutta exhibition 1883 (??). source

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling: The only 610 mm gauge line left. Steam services still run, timetabled ones as well as special 'excursion' runs which are announced from time to time and may cover sections that are not normally served by steam. The specials often have vintage coach cars attached (also, sometimes, the rare DHR dining car). The DHR has about a dozen steam locos left, and as they break down they are being cannibalized for parts for the remaining ones. Parts are always being switched among the locos in use. At least three 'B' class locos (perhaps more) are in non-working condition and are used just for parts. See the section on preserved locos for some information on the locations of some other ex-DHR locos. Indian Railways Fanclub
New Jalpaiguri-Darjeeling, Neral Matheran, and the Gwalior branch lines, which include Gwalior - Sheopur Kalan, Gwalior - Shivpuri, and Gwalior - Bhind.
