Primarily, this site is devoted to links of prototype information to assist modelers and railfans. Every attempt is made to have accurate and complete information. This list will never be 100% complete, as there were so many small undocumented railways around the world. I expect this will become a monster list as it is. If you can add or correct erroneous information please e-mail Bill Kerr. Any help in creating this list will be appreciated. My acknowledgement to those sites that I have derived much of this information from. Where possible I have listed them as the "source".
Museums are also listed. One list as many of the the railroads are also currently run as tourist lines or museums sites. There are sites with static displays (locomotives), that are not operating railroads, I have listed them, but their titles are not in Bold. The listings are broken up over six pages for faster loading over the Internet. There are many sites dedicated to locomotives where additional information can also be found. Ran into sites with some twofoot information, too good to pass up, but where to put these? Also, there is a section just devoted to WW1 information.
It was the world wide 30" gauge listing that inspired the two foot listing. For 18" gauge railroads you can visit here. Narrower? Try monorails (scroll down page) Again my thanks and acknowledgment to the many sites where I have used their information to create my listings, if it was not for them, this list could never exist. Individual acknowledgements for John Dennis reviewing Australian listings, Michael Johnson of the 30" list, Jorge Garreta Mendoza who will be providing information on South America, Elio Galessio for Peru, Mark Kendricks, Clark's NGRR site for much info on the US and Mexico, Dag Grada, David Meller for providing much of the information about Poland (Belarus, Lithuania & Ukraine) railways, and room for this list to grow ;^ )

ZIG ZAG Railways Worldwide There are several ways of getting round the problem of sharp corners and steep gradients. One is by means of a Zig Zag, or Zigzag, (Double switchback in the Americas,), with reversing stations. Another is to use very tight curves if there is space. A variant using very tight curves is the helix or spiral, some of these go through mountains, others use bridges. For details of different types of solutions to sharp direction changes: Helixes, Tunnels, Spirals, and Other Unique Trackage The term V-switch was used where only one change of direction was made, or single switchback. If there was plenty of space a balloon loop was used as the preferred method of turning a whole train round to face back in the direction it had come from. Where there was less space a 'triangle' (UK) or 'wye' (USA - looks like the letter 'Y') was used.
