Partial Solar Eclipse
Vancouver, July 30, 2000

This was an evening eclipse that ended just before sundown.
The last few shots show the still slightly eclipsed sun moving into the clouds on the horizon.

This turned into an impromptu sidewalk astronomy event for me, and other RASC,
Vancouver members, Bryan Kelso and Peter Whitelegg, since it was a busy
evening at the beach and many people wanted to look at the eclipse.

One sad thing was that a newspaper had published times which were off by 2 hours.
Some people told us that we were wasting our time since the eclipse was over.
We had to let them look through the telescope to convince them, and one man
even claimed that we had a picture on the front of the telescope (the filter!).

Eclipse Pictures:
The final configuration chosen for the eclipse was as follows:

Celestar 8 telescope on wedgepod
Homemade Baader Planetarium solar filter
Nikon FM2n camera back
Fujica 2x eyepiece magnifier
Cable release
Fuji Superia 400 print film

Where possible, assumed optimum settings were bracketed with speeds above and below.
The focal ratio of the above configuration was f10 and the focal length was 2032mm.

Geographical location of our observation point was
near the ocean on Spanish Banks beach, Vancouver, BC,
at approximately:

49° 16.65' N Lat.
123° 13.05' W Long.
Height: 3m
