List of Restricted and Prohibited Firearms

With the exception of the tazer and the pen gun, it seems there are four general classes of gun that are prohibited. Fully automatic firearms are out, and that's the first class. The second class is so called "assault weapons", which are generally semi automatic firearms that look like the are of military lineage. Their actual utility as weapons of battle is secondary to appearance. The third class are large caliber "sniper" type firearms, which is absurd as there are many large caliber rifles of identical utility that are non-restricted. The fourth class are pistol type guns that have usage as carabines, that is they are semi automatic weapons that can have stocks added to them, and generally come with a magazine with a capacity that is higher than that prescribed by Canadian regulation, that is magazines that hold more than ten bullets.I have colour coded the prohibited list as follows:

military looking semi-automatic rifles and shotguns large caliber, long range rifles Carabine type pistols

Compiling this list has left me both appalled and confused. Appalled at how poorly thought out, and confused at what it is actually attempting to do. Many of the entries exist merely because they exist in either an existing statute in the USA restricting so called 'Assault Weapons', or just because it looks dangerous. The meaning of variant or modified makes this list completely nonsensical, as there is no rhyme nor reason for come weapons to be included and others left out.

My personal opinion is that no weapons should be denied citizens of a democratic states. For a list of things that are banned to exist, there should at a minimum be a logical and consistent rationale for inclusion on the list. This series of ad-hoc lists has neither logic nor consistency.

What follows is my attempt at guessing the logic and/or rationale. I could be and probably am wrong on any of them, as I am attempting to understand the unfathomable.

IMPORTANT NOTE: PLEASE READ THIS ANALYSIS OF THE MEANING OF VARIANT: http://teapot.usask.ca/cdn-firearms/NFA/Senate.pre/s-xviia.995

Legal Language Description Guessed Reason Reasons Against
