The Hebrew Aleph Bet

Jewish scholars and mystics see the Hebrew aleph-bet (alphabet) as a profound spiritual force. It has been said that the letters are the raw materials of creation. Along with this belief is the thought that if the letters were to return to heaven, there would be an absolute vacuum in the universe.

Quote from the torah on the world was created AT- the beginning and the last letters

The exploration of the letters can be used as a means of reaching spiritual heights. The letters can be explored in many ways: through the study of Torah, through gamatira- a mathematical formuals for finding meaning in words and letters, or as individual objects of contemplation.

The Hebrew alphabet is made up of 22 letters, all of which are consonants. Every letter is a potential channel between heaven and earth. The vowels sounds are added underneath the letters. When sounded as chants, each of the vowels has been linked to moving energy in various parts of the body, as well as activating various aspects of the creative forces in the universe.

Below are examples of ways to approach the study of specific letters:

The Aleph is the first letter of the alpha-bet. It relates to the number 1. It symbolizes uniqueness, infiniteness, and primacy. It is the root of all the sacred letters. It's sound is like a sigh, a quiet silence which brings us close to eternal energetic forces.

Contemplation on The Aleph Bet

This meditation is a hitbonenut or contemplation. You will be contemplation an object which brings the mind into a particular focus allowing the mind to transcend itself. The object will be the letter aleph.

Preparation: Begin sitting comfortably with your back straight, shoulders relaxed and the back of your neck long.Cover your shoulders with a blanket.

Getting Started: Close your eyes. Let your breath flow in through your nostrils. Feel the coolness of you breath at the back of your nostrils. When thoughts arise that distract you, acknowledge them and let them gently float off and return to focussing on your breath. Now imagine the letter aleph. Place this image at your third eye, inside your mind above and between your eye brows. Or, you can imagine the Aleph as a flame burning.Hold this image as long as possible.
