Obituary. Vernon Morning Star Newspaper. Wednesday September 26, 2001

 

We regret to announce the death of Mavis Rowena Cameron [nee Huston] September 22,2001 at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital at the age of 80 years. She is survived by her sons Leslie Gray [Terri] Cameron, of Kaledon, Huston Tupper [Mari] Cameron of Vernon, daughter Marjorie Lillian Cameron of Vancouver, and grandchildren Tyler, Eric, Bryanne and Sean. The wife of Lt. Colonel Donald Roderick Cameron. Mavis was a resident of Vernon since 1948, having been active in many Okanagan and B.C. organizations and causes including University Women's, United Empire Loyalists, Historical and Genealogical Societies, Okanagan Landing Association, and the N.O Naturalist Society. Most passionately, she held an unending commitment to improving education and conditions for the deaf in B.C. She will be fondly remembered by family and many thousands of students and teachers whom she shared a lengthly career as teacher and librarian in many Vernon schools.

Funeral Services will be held September 29th at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Church in Vernon, with Reverend Bob Thompson officiating. Cremation. Reception to follow at Trinity. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mavis may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of B.C. or the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

MAVIS ROWENA [HUSTON] CAMERON

 1921c 2001

 Mavis Houston was born in Ashcroft, BC where her father was the pharmacist. She had lived in Vernon since 1948, where she worked as a teacher and librarian. Mavis was married to Lt. Colonel Donald Roderick Cameron who predeceased her in Kamloops, in 1980. Survived by sons Leslie Gray [Terri], Houston Tupper [Mari] and daughter Marjorie Lillian Cameron.

Mavis was involved in the University Women’s, historical, and genealogical societies including the Thompson-Okanagan UEL. Her brother Dr. Mervyn James Houston MC #6137-89and Mavis MC# 6135-89 both received their certificates through the Vancouver branch.

An uncle Leslie Robb Gray is MC # 2165-81 through London and Western District branch.

Christian Zavitz born 1750 Bucks Co., PA died 1826, he married Mary McCarty.They had eleven children including:

daughter Hannah Zavitz born 1807 in Humberstone Tp., Welland Co, On, she died 1883 in London On. She married Wm. Robb and they had eight children including :

daughter Mary Zavitz Robb born 1828 in London ON., Mary died in 1910 in London, ON. She married James Westland in 1846 in London, ON. They had nine children including:

daughter Margaret Emma Westland born 1857, in London, ON. She died in 1933. Margaret married James Gray in 1883. They had six children  including:

daughter Irene Mary Gray born 1885who married Wm. Mervyn Houston.

They had at least two children Mervyn James Huston and Mavis Rowena Houston.
