Me to We-Craig Kielburger's Message
By Carol Dou
Recently, Zoey and I got the chance to go to one of Craig Kielburger's speeches. First of all, Craig is the founder of Me to We and Free the Children. Since the age of 12, he's been traveling through North America talking about the issue of child rights in developing countries. At his speech, we learned about what he was passionate about. But unlike most charities, Craig didn't ask us to donate to his cause. What he wanted was for everyone to take action because it seems that in our world today, everyone was aware of what was going on, yet everyone kept waiting. Whether it was because teens didn't think they could make an impact on the world, or that adults believed others would do something about it, people closed their hearts to what was going on.
Craig stressed the importance of doing something. And it doesn't have to be about becoming a child rights advocate, it can be anything you are passionate about. It could be the environment, child illiteracy, animal rescue; the possibilities are endless. During his speech, one quote really stood out to me. It was one of Mother Teresa's: "In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love. "I believe that this captures the essence of the world today. We ask ourselves, how can we possibly make a change in the world that will affect anyone? And the truth is, we can't. We can't do great things that will be remembered by generations to come, but we can make a difference one small step at a time. Things as small as just asking a friend to help you start a environmental club, volunteering, or fundraising for a local charity. If each person in the world were to do something like that, think about the impact of that. My point is, that we should start today. We need to do something now. We can't afford to wait until we're older.
Sometimes it is hard to think of what we want to do. What can we do? Below are 10 easy ways to change the world, one small action at a time.
1. Wear eco-friendly, sweatshop-free apparel.
