Formed 1973. Billy Lyall (keyboards) and David Paton(bass) met again at Edinburgh's Craighall Recording Studio. The two previously played together in the Bay City Rollers in the early formulative years when they were mainly a Beatles cover band. Joined by Stuart Tosh(drums) Pilot was formed.
Early in 1974 the recorded some demos. EMI was interested an assigned Alan Parsons the task of producing the first release.Magic soared up the charts in North America and January topped the charts in England.

Ian Bairnson (guitarist) officially joined the group. He had helped on the debut album but was not an official band member. The band recorded Second Flight and Morin Heights(1976). After Morin Heights Billy left the band to go solo and engineer Marilyn Miller's album. Billy's solo album had Pilot members contributing.

Stuart left the band to join 10cc. In 1977 Pilot made one last album called Two's A Crowd. After which all four band members eventaully worked on Alan Parsons Project albums as well as session works.David helped with Kate Bush, Elton John, Fish and Camel. He also recorded two solo albums.
