Fleury is poster child for little guys with guts

The Sporting News
March 27, 1995
Larry Wigge

Don't say big is better around Flames right wing Theo Fleury--unless you want a fat lip.

Teams are going after wide bodies who can add bang to their lineups, figuring it's easier to push a smaller player around and black
him out on defense.

"That's a bunch of crap," says Fleury, who is 5 feet 6, 160 pounds and is in the middle of every altercation on the ice. "If that
garbage was true, how do you explain the 17 goals I've scored this season? Charity for the little guy? Come on.

"Sure a little guy has to fight harder to be successful. But you don't judge a good player by his jersey size. You judge him by his
heart and intestinal fortitude. Most big guys don't have the guts to play the game hard. They're like big, dumb robots out there."

Fleury, Toronto's Doug Gilmour and Buffalo's Pat LaFontaine have shown that no matter how big players get, small players will have a place in this game. Fleury, in fact, has been among the best right wings in the NHL this season--up there with Pittsburgh's Jaromir Jagr and St. Louis' Brett Hull.

"I've never run into a more stubborn competitor in the NHL," says Blues left wing Esa Tikkanen, who faced Fleury seven times a
season when Tikkanen played for the Oilers. "You could call him a runt, a little SOB, anything, and he wants to fight you.

"He's got a mean streak next to none, and he uses it to stand up to all of the bigger players in the league. He's something else."

With Gary Roberts out for the season, Fleury, Joe Nieuwendyk and Joel Otto are the only Flames left from their 1989 Stanley Cup
team. It's easy to see why Fleury is still around.

"Theo plays the same way every night," Coach Dave King says. "That's what makes him such a great leader for our young players. They have to be impressed by the effort he puts in every night."

That effort and the bundle of goals Fleury has scored will get him a big, new contract in the offseason. And he will have earned every penny.

"I've had to play this way since I was 5," Fleury says. "If I let down, I might as well quit. I've earned a pretty good living in this league, and I'm in the option year of my contract this season. No one is going to deny me a chance to get the kind of security I want for my family--no matter how big they are."

That's a little sample of how big Theo Fleury really is.
