What is required to be married in Alberta?
Being married in the Province of Alberta is a simple matter. All that is needed are two people who wish to be married, a marriage license, two witnesses over the age of 18, and an officiant who is licensed/registered by the Government of Alberta to perform the ceremony.
Marriage licenses are purchased through any of the Registries Offices in
the province of Alberta. For a Registry Agent closest to you see: http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/617.cfm
The basic requirements obtain a license are as follows;
(a) Couples
may consist of a man and a woman, a man and a man or a woman and a woman.
(b) Both
parties must be present when applying for the license and at the ceremony and
must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
(c) Both
parties must provide valid identification.
(d) If
either party (or both) has been married and divorced they must produce
documentation of the finalization of the divorce proceedings.
(e) If
either or both parties are under 18 years of age special documentation and
permission is required. See: http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/1149.cfm
Marriage licenses issued in Alberta are valid only in Alberta and remain
so for three months from the date of issue. Marriage licenses issued elsewhere
are not valid for use in Alberta.
The Marriage registration is completed by the licensed/registered
officiant after the ceremony and forwarded to Vital Statistics in Edmonton.
Marriage Certificates are not automatically issued. The couple must apply
through a Registries Agent to obtain a Marriage Certificate.
If there is a need for the Marriage Certificate in a rush I can assist
with having it issued in as few as two working days.
