Thumbalina - A Kitten Rescue Story - June 26, 2010
A
kitten, we later named Thumbalina, was rescued
from a horrible backyard party, where some adults were kicking her around. She
was covered in dirt and was completely black. She was dehydrated. Beer had been
poured on her. When the adult who stepped forward to rescue the kitten told them
she was taking the kitten, their response was "Good, because we were going
to either drown her in the tub or throw her in the fire pit".
Horrified, the young woman bathed the kitten, discovering she was a beautiful beige Siamese. The rescuer slept with the kitten that night, and cried tears for this tiny kitten, who was treated so brutally.
Thumbalina was seen by a vet and prescribed pain medication, a steroid, and antibiotic. Xrays showed no broken bones, but she had a pulmonary contusioin, which, in layman's words, was a bruised lung.
Thumbalina was in a lot of trouble and a lot of pain. The Animal Assistance Group stepped up to the plate immediately and helped administer some initial care until the vet's office was open. The Animal Assistance Group is still assisting and helping to save little Thumbalina.
It took a lot of courage for a petite young woman to stand up to these horrible people. She put herself at risk in rescuing the kitten. Her courage and kindness may in fact be instrumental in having saved this kitten's life. Thumbalina is still not out of the woods, but every day there is hope that her healing will progress.
The young woman who saved this kitten is my daughter, who I am very proud of. The Animal Assistance Group should be commended for their ongoing support and care of Thumbalina.
Knowing now what it means to rescue a vulnerable pet, I can't seem to do enough to help this organization meet its needs and help its cause. Through Thumbalina's story, maybe there will be a greater knowledge of what we all can do as a community to keep this organization running. It takes so little effort to make a monetary donation, or to donate food, litter, cat beds, or even just things around our home that we dont need or use, to be given to their yearly fundraising events such as their yard sale.
Awareness is the first step in making a difference.

Love Always, Brittany
Thumbalina died not long after her ordeal due to the complications of her injuries causing neurological damage. Rest in Peace Thumbalina.
