do you remember when cars had tail fins?

I remember my '59 Chev had enough extra sheet metal to build a Volkswagen.

I remember gasoline was so cheap that we could afford to move all that extra sheet metal.

1958 Sweet Caps Ad do you remember the sweet caporal cigarette ads with the marching girl?

Did you ever wonder how she could smoke and march too?
Did you ever wonder if kissing her would be like kissing an ash tray?
Did you ever wonder just what the heck a Caporal was?

do you know what this is?

Rings, rings, rings - but what kind of rings?

This one is harder, unless you are really, really old!
The answer is at the bottom of the page.

Fire Call Box  do you remember when there was a fire alarm pull box on every block?

I remember them being there, but I don't remember when they disappeared.  Maybe it was after most houses had their own telephone

do you remember when there were police call boxes on every beat?

I remember the boxes were blue.
I remember they had blue lights on top that flashed when headquarters was calling the beat cop.
I remember the cop on the beat walking down the street swinging his call box key on a string.
I am sorry that I haven't been able to find a decent photograph of one.

Antique wall telephone - composite image do you remember when telephones had cranks and the earpiece was separate from the mouthpiece?

I remember the telephone hung on the wall out in the front hall.
I remember needing a chair to reach the mouth piece.
I remember when long distance phone calls were for births and deaths, and NEVER lasted more than 3 minutes.

do you know what this is?
answer
The photo above shows a pile of rings used to make decorative chain mail. Below is a small sample of chain mail.

Decorative Chain Mail - modern

The chain mail you wore into battle in the old days (if you are really, really old) probably had the open ends of the rings riveted to keep the mail from running like a nylon stocking every time someone poked you with his sword.
