remember when ironing was sad?

Or should I say, do you remember the Sad Iron?
Do you remember heating them on the stove?
Do you remember transferring the handle from a cool one to a hot one as the soles cooled off?
I bet your lightweight electric steam iron doesn't make you sad.

do you remember when ironing got easier with a coleman gasoline iron?
Do you remember filing, pumping, lighting and tinkering with the heater?
I bet your lightweight electric steam iron doesn't leave your clothes smelling like gasoline.

do you remember the first electric irons?

Do you remember how easy they were to operate?
Just plug them in, warm them up, and scorch your clothes.
I bet you still wouldn't trade your lightweight electric steam iron for this old heavyweight.

do you know what this is?

(the answer is at the bottom of the page)

Do you remember when we took the chill off a draughty room with a radiant heater?
I remember being told over and over and over again to keep away from the electric heater because I could tip it over and set the house on fire, I could burn myself on it, or I could electrocute myself with it, or maybe, just maybe, do all three at once.
I remember the cat laying so close to the gas heater that you could hardly touch his fur.  Thinking back, it is a wonder our house wasn't set alight by a flaming cat.

do you remember when the fireplace was a serious source of heat?

Do you remember sitting around the fireplace telling stories, singing and socializing?
I remember cooking hot dogs and marsh mallows and roasting potatoes in our fireplace.
I remember the fireplace decorated for Christmas.

do you remember when these pages all had blue backgrounds?
The blue backgrounds will be back as soon as I remember where I put my blue crayon!

do you know what this is?
answer

This is a corn popper for making popcorn
in an open fire or in a fireplace.  The cross
wire in the middle pulls back a lid for filling
and emptying the popper.  The popper is
made of metal screen, so the popcorn has
a slightly smoky flavour (or maybe that came
from almost burning the popcorn by getting
the popper too close to the flames.)
