DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN WE HUNG
THE wash IN THE KITCHEN to dry ON RAINY DAYS?
I remember the string that pulled across the kitchen and how you could wind it back into its box with a crank. It was for light things. I remember the thing like a spider that hung on a wall. You could hang things on the legs. It was for heavier things. I remember a wooden drying rack that pulled up to the ceiling on ropes and pulleys. It was for the heaviest things. So far I have not found a picture of one. |

| DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN WE KEPT
THINGS COOL IN AN ICE BOX?
I remember the ice man bringing in big blocks of ice with his tongs. 25 pounds a week in the winter, 50 pounds a week in the summer. I remember him cutting the ice blocks with his ice pick so that he could fit them in the top compartment. I remember it was my job to empty the water pan that sat under the ice box. I must not have been very good at it because I remember my dad drilling a hole in the kitchen floor and running a drain hose down into the basement. |

Do you remember when we made
our own ice cream?
Do you remember chipping the ice from the top of the ice box? Do you remember running out of ice before the ice man came if you made too many batches of ice cream? I remember all us kids wanted to be first to turn the crank. I also remember that we all got tired of turning the crank before the ice cream was finished. |
| Do you remember when We took
tube radios to the beach or on a picnic?
Do you remember all the batteries they took? The big A battery. The B battery that could shock your fingers if you weren't careful. And sometimes a C battery. I remember how heavy they were. I remember how the sound would fade slowly into silence as the batteries died - usually in the middle of my favourite programme. |
