Ace and Shooster were Humane Society specials.
Ace was an especially sad case. She had been rescued by a vet in Blind River, after a few months of being starved and neglected. It took a few months to get her back on the road to recovery, after which he spayed her, then turned her over the the Humane Society in the Soo for adoption, when she was a year old. She picked us.
Her health was good for most of her time with us. She went deaf in 2002, but adapted quickly to responding only to hand signals. Then in early 2003 we noticed she was getting stiff in her hind legs. We thought it was just arthritis, but it wasn't. She had spinal degeneration, with no cure for it. It was only a matter of time.
The medications we got from the vet slowed the progression for a while, but in mid-July Ace began her final slide. She was put to sleep 12 Aug 2003, with the three of us at her side.
Ace was a goofy, funny, affectionate dog. We'll miss her.
