Oregon – September 2008

Road trip to Oregon with Teanny, my lovely girlfriend.

What do we know about Oregeon. Well it is south of Washington and north of California and about 6 hours drive from Vancouver plus the extended wait at the border and has no sales tax.

Where do we go I hear you ask ? After a weekend in Portland we headed for the coast where we spent a week working our way from north to south and got about 2/3rds the way down. Big thumbs up to the Oregin coast especially the sand dunes around Florence and the big Sandune at Cape Kiwanda. I'm told that the bit of the coast that we missed (Bandon to Brookings) is pretty good as well but that is for next time.

Then it was into the interior for a quick stop in Grants Pass for a jetboat ride before turning north for the highlight of the trip, Crater Lake. This place really does need to be seen to be believed and is beautiful.

After of couple of days at the lake we went to Bend to see more volcanic related stuff before heading back to the Columbia Gorge and then home.

And where did we stay ? 4 nights in motels, 5 nights camping, 4 nights in basic yurts/cabins in Oregon state parks and 1 night in another cabin.

The yurts and cabins provided in the State Parks are advertized as Camping Lite and are certainly better than sleeping in a tent since they come with heating, electricity and beds. They are also good value for money at $30-$40 a night and sleep up to 5. They come highly recommended by me (what greater recommendation could you want). Only problem is that they are popular with everyone else as well and in the summer are booked up months in advance. We went after Labour Day and either just asked when we turned up or booked a couple of days ahead

And how did you get around ? Drove my car. For this sort of trip you must have a car (or motorbike). Public Transit outside Portland was not very widespread (but did exist in a few places).

What were the highlights ? As stated Crater Lake, the sand dunes on the coast and ATVing on those Sand Dunes (and of course getting to spend 2 solid weeks with my lovely bird)

Now go and look at the photos that we took and posted for your viewing pleasure
