A WebQuest for 11th Grade French | Designed by Karen Lindsay

Introduction

Alfred B. Nobel (1833-1896) was the Swedish chemist who invented dynamite and established in his will the Nobel prizes for Peace, Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Economics. Nobel’s desire was to offer a prize "to those who during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind."

Over the years, French scientists, writers and humanitarians have won each of the coveted awards, and you are about to be instrumental in adding to their numbers. Beginning this year, the Nobel Foundation wishes to create some posthumous prizes for men and women whose contribution to the world occurred before the establishment of the Nobel Prizes, and to offer prizes in certain fields yet to be acknowledged. They have asked you to nominate a French person, famous or obscure, without whom our modern world would have been affected for the worse. You will be asked to provide details about the person’s early years and background, the period in which they lived, their contribution to the world and its significance at that time and now, and to state in clear terms why you think that they deserve this high honour.

Students will need to be able to understand authentic French documents, bring together information from a variety of sources, French and English, and present their findings in both spoken and written French.
