~As you may be aware, I have essentially stopped updating this website.
This is due to a combination of being very busy with math/physics at
university and a diversion in my musical interests to the piano. As fun as
the ukulele is, I find that I am much more restricted in what I can play
as it is much more difficult to make up a melody and fit the chords around
the melody on the 4 strings of the ukulele than it is with the 10 fingers
and 88 keys of the piano and as such, since I only really have time to
compose things for my own interests, it seems to be the piano that is
winning out. However, that does not mean I have lost all interest in the
ukulele, nor does it mean you shouldn't ever expect this website to be
updated again with new songs or content, its just I have been on something
of a recording ukulele songs break:)

~ It is official, I am accompanying the Island Ukulele's on their tour of
Seattle from the 20th to the 24th of this month as a guest performer with
ten to fifteen minutes of solo performance by myself each concert.
UPDATES ARE COMING! I have two full
solo songs completely arranged, learned and perfected for the tour that I
haven't managed to record yet, along with rerecording several pieces that
have been seriously improved or changed, I am still planning on recording
decent versions of Albinez's Asturias Leylanda and Vivaldi's Concerto in C
and working on some piano/drums/uke jazz pieces. All that I have been
promising in the just removed "content soon to come" section WILL come,
either just before or just after the Seattle tour, but right now I am
worrying about creaming all my exams.
So this time round I have only updated the
links page to reciprocate with new found inbound links to this
website. In particular, the
Hawaiian Ukulele Guild and and BC
ukulele and Catfish's Uke
page, all of whom link back to my webpage.

~ I made the contact email prompt actually work. I hadn't noticed, but
when I redid the site for just ukulele, I typed my email in with the
incorrect tag. Nothing more then my inabilities with html. My apologies to
any who tried to contact me.
I played with the tables on my webpage to try
and make them line up better, it was never a problem on my 1024*768
laptop, but when I viewed them at 1152 * 864 on a 19" monitor, it really
didn't look very good.
I found another ukulele related website,
www.ezFolk.com. It has a lot of other
non uke stuff, but a decent set of uke links and other info. And right at
the top of the links is yours truly:
links
This website also contains a relatively comprehensive, albeit varied, set
of ukulele links here,
again, with me alphabetized in the list.
I added to the links page links to pages on my web from many of my
previous versions of this website. There is some interesting stuff in
their including a digression about The Perfection of Music I
wrote, some funny images of me and eclectic quotations.
Yesterday marks my 15th "montherthary" with a
certain Amy Burgess, which is implicitly exciting to me, but probably of
little consequence to you.

~ No content has been added, just this news post. The other day I was
randomly searching
google for my name and my website has been linked to by no less then 3
(three) other ukulele websites.
Ukulele
Boogaloo ,
Ukulele Flea Market and
RockThatUke.com which, as well as referring to me as a "uke
funkmeister" has a comprehensive list of ukulele players and groups
including virtuosos like Jake Shimabakuro and James Hill as well as Island
ukulele's itself, and now me. (www.rockthatuke.com
is the main page). Its nice to know that 2/3 of those I was completely
unresponsible for getting my link posted, and thus people I don't even
know about are clearly finding out about me and my website. The Audio
Clips page even has a PageRank now!
I am planning on going with the Island
Ukuleles on their Seattle tour this April, where I have been told I get
from 5-10 minutes of solo performance time. I am very excited about this
and it is definitely a motivating thing to work towards getting all my
songs perfected and whatnot. I would like to have enough of my peices
rerecorded and perfected by then that I can take a few copies of my CD,
(made at home) along on the trip, just in case someone has a huge
unplatonic love for me and desires a copy of my music.
You can look forward to a recording of
Albinez's Asturias Leylanda, a solo guitar piece I am arranging for
ukulele. Along with the Vivaldi's Concerto in C, these pieces take much
more time then my typical learn and record the piece within a day or two
style.
I am also planning a special little something
for the Island Ukuleles tour, but it is somewhat of a secret at the
moment, and besides I wouldn't want to get anyone's hopes up and then not
be able to do it:D

~ I had yet another American complain about the slowness of my audio
downloads and so I finally got off my butt and implemented the Ohio
download mirror I have had set up from an internet friend of mine. The
audio clips page now contains a table with both the Victoria and Ohio
mirrors, track length and whether the recording is a personal composition
or just an arrangement.
The website now has a new redirect address:
trefor.owns.it No www. no .com
no nothing (how's that for grammar) Simple type in
trefor.owns.it into the address bar (also
ukulele.thinkbig.at works) and it
redirects to this website. Makes it easier for people to remember this
way. Incidentally, the redirect has been setup for months, I am just not
sufficiently belligerent about dealing with email to activate the account.
I also rerecorded Spanish Fiddling today.
Seeing as the webpage is being forwarded to the Island Ukuleles I just
had to do something to improve the site. This was the first
piece I ever uploaded to the website, and, well, to make a long story
short, I'm technically more proficient these days...and hence. Its still a
quite poor recording as far as these things go, and will be recorded again
I'm sure, however it does have a better ending (Just to please
Tina)
Incidentally, in other news, I have
managed to persuade the folks to purchase a MIDI interface for my electric
piano. So, as soon as Long and McQuade manages to order it, I can connect
the piano to the computer and begin adding glockenspiel , marimba,
pan flute and some 2000 other audio patches to my recording-that is, if it
actually makes sense to do so. Ahhh the joys of technology...

~Deep in the middle of my rational vector field assignment for
mathematics, I came up with a ridiculously sweet chord progression: Am, Em
add4, Am, Dm6, Am, Em add4, Am. The trick is that the base note, in all cases,
is A. Furthermore, the chords, except for the bottom string, are all very
high up on the fret board, higher in fact then I thought would sound good. Eitherway, I sat down and recorded the first trial of
movimiento
(Spanish for Motion). I have lots of cool plans for this progression,
incorporating a chord solo (like how I started in the recording) with lots
of tremelo incorporated and some dual string finger picking that sounds
cool.

~I restructured the site today. The Thoughts and Multimedia sections have
been placed back into my "old" and personal webpage and the ukulele page
has been divided into the navigation tabs you see above: about, audio
samples, Ukes and equipment and teachings. With this, older news posts
that didn't contain ukulele information, and non uke related links on the
links page have been removed, and are only available on the old page. This
officially marks the complete transition from a website intended for
interesting quotations, funny or personal pictures and gnomic philosophies
into a page dedicated solely for the ukulele. *sigh*
In terms of new content, the only thing that has been added is some more
info then was previously here, under the about page, including the cover
picture for my planned CD.
I also have a potential opportunity to
perform for the Ukulele Unlimited concert in Victoria. The concert is many
elementary school in the area coming together playing the ukulele, and I
suppose I would be a form of guest performer. However, this is not
definite yet.
On a side note, my computer teacher just started talking about
"sentinels" with respect to data structures in Java, and as such I am
going to have to take a break from fixing this webpage, let alone paying
attention in class, and contemplate the disappointment that is the Matrix
Revolutions. (What was I just saying about uke specific content only??)

~I have recorded and uploaded a primarily improvisation song which is, in
my opinion, quite cool and I have aptly named it Uke Funk. The piece is
"off" at the beginning and needs more work still. I acquired
Cakewalk SONAR 3, an incredible (and expensive) piece of recording and
mixing software. The quality, as you can probably tell from the uploaded
recording of Uke Funk, is quite a lot better and the features are
literally amazing. With the almost negligible latency with this program I
should almost completely redo Alla Luce Del Sole as I had a lot of
difficulty getting it to line up right due to the time differences.

~I finished recording Alla Luce del Sole today. It is by far the hardest
piece to record yet. Don't get me wrong, other pieces are harder to play,
but with 4 tracks, and the tremolo and strumming both very quick getting
everything to line up and sound good was a big challenge. I am still not
happy with the result completely, but it definitely was a learning
experience. I won't be able to make the piece any better in the short term
unfortunately seeing as a my beautiful recording studio was stolen away
from me!!:(. Of course by "my" I mean it was very cool so I wished it was
mine and by "stolen" I mean rightfully given back. Guess its just back to
my little Sony mike from now on.
I uploaded the recording for Round the
Bend that I have had lying on my computer for some time now. I
also actually made the "download all pieces" link download all and not
about half of the pieces.
I also came up with the title to my album, if
and when I ever get around to burning CD's to give to
people: Más alto ideal which means dream higher in Spanish (I have so many
Spanish pieces it seems)

~A lot of content was added to the ukulele section, namely: my written
guide to improvisations, descriptions of my ukuleles and equipment and
images of my "recording studio's" and other uke related pictures. A simple
menu system was added to the uke page to try and keep the content under
control. As time goes on, I hope to add more instructive works to my
website. I am currently working on a arranging Alla Luce del Sole, a piece
sung by Josh Groban, for the ukulele. Recording the 4 tracks I am
arranging it into is proving difficult with timing and such but the brief
sample I have successfully recorded does sound very cool in my opinion.

~Reconstructed the site. We went from a rather drab dot matrix of gray's
to the incredibly romantic picture you see above...with the new colour
scheme to boot. In doing this, I brought the number of Tabs down to just
the 5 you see now, so there aren't quite so many pointless tabs along the
top. Through this, I have removed some of the more pointless content and
am still in the process of "trimming" the fat and concentration on the
content that I actually want to have here. I also uploaded a new Ukulele
song with this, called "Flamenco" and it is basically a piece I wrote that
explores some flamenco themes.

~I figured out, learnt and recorded all in one day a new song for the
ukulele that came from my jazz piano lessons called "Beautiful Love." The
mp3 is uploaded in the Ukulele section. I also
played through and uploaded 3 other songs which I had known previously.
However, I plan to record these songs again after I have actually
practiced them some amount.

~Recorded a song for the uke that I uploaded in the
Uke section. I had tried previously to record onto my computer via the
mike jack on the computer using Micro$oft's basic sound recorder. The
result was very crappy, and I just assumed that it was the sound card of
the computer and the mike jack that was the limitation (this is compaq we
are talking about here...nothing fancy;). Anyways, on a whim I tried using
the freeware program Audacity
which recorded with much higher quality as well as recording a full range
of pitches...(the M$ recorder couldn't handle low notes and didn't even
pick up high notes). I then removed white noises, adjusted the
levels a bit and converted into mp3 using
CDex (Brilliant music CD ripping
program, btw). I am not exactly happy with the recording, and so I will
probably add a better version when I get around to being able to play
better.

~I saw James Hill perform the
other day, and was inspired to create a new song for the uke. It is pretty
cool, although I am having trouble recording most of it in any amount of
decent quality. I added a new ukulele section to
the site, it should contain audio clips and uke info.
