Halloween 2003

Overview

The scene is in a glass-doored cabinet that is part of an entertainment center from IKEA. The cabinet bridges the gap between two bookshelves and sits over a TV. The cabinet is at about eye level for an adult and has a light built in.

The background is simply craft paper and was very unsatisfying. I have used similar in more traditional village layouts with ceramic houses but taken more time to attach effectively and decorate with clouds, stars whatever. Even so it still looks like crap so I am working on a reversible painted background that will fit the cabinet and have a "day" and a "night" side for Halloween or Christmas.

The biggest MOC is a vampire's castle using figures and bits from the Vampire Crypt #1381 with a bunch of castle wall pieces. It is basically a movie style false front for display in the limited depth available. I will be making things taller next time (and probably adding some foam bases to fill up the height and to add a second tier for display. (Note in the overall picture you might notice a dinosaur rampaging throught the vampire's castle. That was my son's idea.)

Near the castle an unwary group of trick or treaters.

Trick or Treaters

A spooky tree with lots of nasty creatures waiting to eat the kids or their treats.

I found the Scary Laboratory #1382 in a clearence store the week before Halloween and had to get it. Other than adding a mummy (one of two Curse of the Pharaoh #1383 sets I also found at clearance prices recently) this is just a stock set.

Overall a cute little display but nothing to bother posting on LUGNET. It mostly has got my juices flowing for Christmas and pointed out some of the design challenges in filling such a space.

I used lots of the LEGO Studios series of monster movie bits and I am really sort of sad to see them being discontinued. I think all I need to get the whole series is the Werewolf Ambush #1380 which is the one I actually wanted to get first but have yet to see on sale [Update: finally found one for half-price at Winners in 2004.] Now what about a "Creature from the Black Lagoon" set or how about bad sci-fi flicks? That would be great.
