Portfolio Meeting
|
|

|
On behalf
of KitsPAC, Ingrid Bjerkelund and Joanne Naslund attended a city wide meeting
on Nov 1 at Magee to discuss the portfolio requirements. Joanne submitted
this report:
The meeting was interesting and was attended by students, teachers,
counsellors and a few parents-- about 40 people in total. Questions were
raised about whether or not Gr. 10's. 11's and current 12's need to worry
about the portfolio. A strong request was made that the Ministry circulate a
clear decision regarding the portfolio by the end of December.
There seemed to be some comments that alluded to positives of the portfolio
but generally there was real dissatisfaction due to lack of resourcing,
inservice and clear implementation of a program that was substantially
different.
The Minister Shirley Bond wants to get feedback from interested parties. Any
interested parent(s) can respond to the review questions of the Ministry’s
Review of the Graduation Portfolio and email them to EDUC.Portfoli
o@gov.bc.ca

As the time of adolescence approaches, parents are often concerned and
anxious over the world of their children. As the children strive for
independence, parents strive to install safety measures and control.
Paradoxically, the more parents try to control, the more children seem to get
out of control. Earning freedom through responsibility allows children to
gain their independence while allowing parents to breathe easier.

Whether it comes from the media, sports such as gymnastics, figure skating

adolescents. Eating disorders are often hard to detect and may be unknowingly
promoted by the expectations of coaches, parents and peers. Supporting your
children to understand healthy body image as well as healthy esteem is
important at this time so that they may filter the numerous messages they
receive and stay healthy inside and out.

2) Pre-Teen - Healthy Relationships
As your child grows up, your relationship changes. As a pre-teen, your child
may seem to be so young and so old at the same time. They are exploring their
independence and new social relationships while looking to you to tuck them
in bed at night. Fashion, media, music, body image, peers, and different
ideas and actions seem to be having greater influence and parents often
wonder where their influence has gone. Underneath it all, your child is still
young and needs your guidance and protection. Explore ways to remain close
with your children while also allowing them to grow and be independent.
Knowing that their parents are there to provide support, values and knowledge
as they face the changing times of adolescence provides the foundation
children need, even if they don't let you know they appreciate it at the
time.
